As i am just getting started in this hobby would any of you be willing to share a picture of your weather rooms?

This was before I added the Davis VP2 station using the VUE console.

Just the basics. Complete w/ children toys, window to look out of, computer, Vue Console, and not much else.

Here are some pictures of my weather room.

Front door (The top and side papers are NWS storm spotter traning certificates)

Crookes radiometer I have this next to the window in the morning the sun shines on it the little whirly spins.

The layout. You can see the VP2, WMR200 and WS1910U-IT to the right hand side.

Bedside weather. I have my bed next to the stations so I can see what's going on outside before I get up. The backlighting of the VP2 and WMR200 double as night lights since they both run continous.

Computer with WeatherDisplay pulled up.
Probably not the best weather room but it does it's purpose.

mckTXaws: you pictures are marked private, so don;t show up for the rest of us. ;)
Here's my corner of the dining room. Far right behind the tea mug is the Davis Weather Envoy. On screen are the gauges, charts, and info from Lightsoft Weather Center (LWC2) as well as the two web cam live video via EvoCam. To the left is an old Airguide anaerobic barometer from 30 years ago. Under the black cloth on the mug in the windowsill is the Logitech webcam. An emergency solar-powered weather radio is beside it, and a First Alert weather radio just off screen to the left.
Out the window you see the bird feeders that are the second image on my web page. And you can sorta see the wooden swing frame, which supports the sailboat mast that my Sharx webcam is mounted on.
Here's a diagram I did when I was setting up the system from the outside showing where I am.
And of course the rest of the system is in the garden (but you've seen that image often enough...)

I went and searched WXforum on my phone which doesn't have my loggin and both yours and my photos show up but we can't see eachothers photos when logged in? That's strange.
-
I meant the pictures of your weather stuff. I right-click, open in new window, and it went to Flickr but said they were private and needed to be logged in to see them. They work fine now, though.
Mine don't show up? :( There's in my public gallery on SmugMug.
-
IDK it works on my phone so I assume that issue is with my computer.
Also Smorris, I saw your Enews article on the Davis web site. Cool! Davis really seems impressed so am I. I found your photo on my phone.
http://www.davisnet.com/news/enews/index.asp Tech tips Garden Vantage Pro2 sited right.
Also, are you going to take up Davis's recommendation on adding a leaf/soil station?
-
Previously this was my work station. Then I sold two old PCs and one laptop to consolidate all activities into one new computer. I miss the multiple screens though.

Sorry for the darkness. The Vantage Vue console is mounted on the wall above the left monitor.

Welcome friends, to the glamorous HQ of DonkeyTail Weather...
(http://mycompany.name/bucket/wxroom3.jpg) (http://mycompany.name/bucket/wxroom2.jpg) (http://mycompany.name/bucket/wxroom1.jpg)
The console is located at the busiest spot in the house, near the cell-phone chargers and the analog phone, viewable from the eating-area table. There is a USB-Xpress above the light switch. The Cat-6 cable and extended power cable for the USBX (back to the UPS) penetrate the wall through a smallish (2cm) hole behind the stove cabinet and into the surface-mount wiremold in the panty/network closet. The laptop is dedicated to WeatherLink (for now) and not usually running the bulletin or anything else. Lid always closed/backlight off. The demarc for cable and phone is here, so I made this the network closet when I built the house 13 years ago, slapped together from work-leftovers. Since the circuit for the freezer high-capacity cooling system is on my backup generator panel, I have a small conditioner/UPS running the show. Internet access was the saving grace when the power was out for a week recently, since only essentials (well, septic, furnace, fridge, freezer, bathroom and kitchen lights) are on the generator. At least when the CABLE was working (it gets hit too occasionally).

Here is mine, added a new weather pc since then, but pretty much the same.

Rest of my station pix can be seen here.

ps: red x's and missing jpgs. I have noticed at work, they have added a new firewall block. images hosted on sites like imgur.com, f.cl.ly and similar sites either dont fully load, are missing completely or are red x'd.

Awesome stations, great insperation.
I really want to get mine setup now :)

Got a new big screen TV used as a computer monitor. This is I think a 27"
Sorry for the dark picture.

Aardvark has finally taken the lead here by showing a working weather room, not an area tidily manicured for a promotional picture. At last I can admit to my sloth.

Ouch! Mine was probably one of the more "manicured" images, so I'll assume I'm included in that slam. I can assure you that my desk always looks like that. Always! The only time something is on the desk, is when I'm working on it, and it is put away when I'm done. In 30 years of engineering work, there was never a day that went by that my desk was not spotless at the end of the day. Call me a neat-freak, anal retentive, or whatever, but I take pride in keeping my space like this.

Sorry! I didn't mean to offend those among us who are steadfastly tidy. I find myself leaving things around so I can easily find them when I need them, and the stuff just accumulates of its own accord. I should have posted a smiley to let you know that the slam was actually for myself, not you. Some would say my web site has the same appearance.

All's cool! Thanks.

I like all the pictures but i must say when i see a desk that clean all i can think about is all the wasted room that i could have stuff sitting on lol.

:D I'll tempt you some more and then back on topic. I worked in engineering for 30 years doing drafting and then CAD work. Inevitably, when someone who didn't know my habits would come to my cubicle, they'd ask if I ever did anything. I told them that everything was either in my he'd or on the computer. I didn't need anything on my desk. :)
Here was my cube. It was exactly the same on the right, but had no overhead cabinet and had an additional 4-foot of desk space. I'd have drawings, notes or castings out, but that's about it. At the end of the day, it was bare.

However, my wife is a slob, with stuff everywhere. We're like the Odd Couple. :)

I was the same way, Felix, neatness was mandatory when I was in the Air Force. Not as much after getting out though. ;)
-
I used to be a neat freak as well. Everything had a special place to be set, everything even major appliances vacuumed and cleaned even underneath and behind regularly etc. But with age I've got away from that some. The problem is complicated by the fact I don't like to throw anything away I might be able to put to use or fix or modify into something else at a later date. One day I came to the realization I was spending all my free time and then some sorting, cleaning and organizing. #-o Slowly I'm turning over a new leaf by keeping less things to clean and not worrying so much if cleaning has to be put off until another time. I'm even subscribing somewhat to the out of site, out of mind version of cleaning. ;) There's only so many hours in the day and one has to set down and just enjoy the fruit of your labor sometime.
As for the weather computer there is really not much to see now. The netbook sets on an old flower stand in a bedroom under the window with the weather cam next to the VP console. Next to it is the old portable scanner feeding NOAA radio to Weather Underground. I do all the software maintenance via VNC from my laptop over my wireless home network while sitting in my recliner in front of the TV and next to the police scanner. No more hovering over a desk for me as far as the weather operation goes. ;)

That's me. Now that I have all the bugs worked out, I very rarely use the weather computer, unless it locks up or needs an update or something. I check the data on other computers, wherever I am.

ditto again. These days I mess with the wx p.c. about every 6 months to temporarily shut it down to open it and vacuum out the dust/dog hair stuff, clean the fan intakes, etc.

Here's my Weather Station Mission Control. I got tired of the endless clutter and cables associated with all of my multiple PCs and peripherals, so I built everything into a 21U Rack Enclosure.
From top to bottom the rack houses: Power dist panel, AM/FM Stereo, Cable Modem/Sonicwall Firewall-Router, extra drives, HP Procurve Switch, Cyberpower UPS, KVM Switch, 2U Chassis, 3U Chassis, 4U Chassis, Rackmount Keyboard Tray.
Same view with the PC Chasis doors open.
Closeup of the PC section. Each PC is built with Thermaltake Hot-Swappable SATA drive bays and a temp monitoring panel. The middle 3U Chassis holds my weather station 24/7 computer, while the bottom 4U Chassis is my General Purpose Desktop - both are multi core (Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge respectively) running Win 7. The Top 2U Chassis is an older Dual Core running XP for misc uses (right now, running an extra webcam).

Derek, aka Moose Whisperer
That is a completely awesome setup. Wow!

I thought that I would add a picture of my humble "Weather Cave".
The monitor on the far right is associated with my Linux box running Weather Display. The Vantage VUE console on the wall has one of SLOWeather's UART boards in it which talks with Weather Display. (by way of USB RS232 dongle, my COM ports were both tied up with other stuff)
The 2nd picture is the HP XW4100 which is running Weather Display and One Wire Weather (OWW). The plots are from a conglomeration of OWWLOG, scripts and the trend desktop plotter program. WD handles uploads to my own site and PWSWeather, OWW still feeds WOW in the UK for some remaining One-Wire sensors.
Upstairs in the family room resides the garden-variety VP2 console with a WeatherlinkIP plugged into it. He does the CWOP/WU uploads.

My set up. That TV is about 25 years old! Still works.

The Lake Chapala WeatherNet corner of the world is a "rustico" desk with Davis, XM radio and small security cam on the left shelves, a Dell Zeno tucked under the left side of the desktop which is networked to two other PC's in another part of the house and UPS regulators at floor level. The OS stations (essentially now retired) to the right. I'm a bit of a "hide-the-wire" freak, and here with solid brick/cement/steel walls it ain't easy, but then I love a challenge. Tomorrow the acquisition of a small generator is at the top of the list, it will be necessary as we approach the rainy season, predicted to start Tuesday - when the normally erratic and unpredictable power gets even worse.

You will, you already have a great weather site and none of us started with what we have now, so growing is part of the fun and good things happen in Hays, America. I'm at the other end of the cycle, downsizing, or trying to, or at least thinking about it? Maybe next year.

I was married to a lady from near Oberlin and she went to the U there in Hays, so we stayed a night there one time and toured all her old haunts. If you think Hays is a bit "restricted", you should try living in a small Mexican village - ha.
-
Mine is just the wx laptop under the bed and the console on the dresser.
That's a bad place for a laptop.
A few months ago there was a house that burned down due to a laptop under the bed became overheated.
-
Gotta do what you gotta do. Mine dont get hot

Been there all 4 seasons, one Christmas we left the Vette parked out at the road because we knew the drifts of the blizzard that was coming in would bury it, been in hail storms, you name it, you guys in KS have a wide variety of weather, down here it's really boring, I wear shorts 95% of the time.
-
Looks like our rainy season started at about 1am this morning, and yes, a brief power out, but the new generator is due to arrive today. Yesterday I got 2,671 hits on the site, it will be interesting to see what the number is tomorrow morning, it usually jumps when the rains start because all the snowbirds are back north and want to see what is happening. That probably means the high for the year was 90.0 on May 30th as it will cool now.
Edit 6/14: Yep, as expected, jumped to 3,688 yesterday, the rain always brings curiosity - and leaks.

Had this setup for a while now. Everything works great except it's gets a little toasty in here when every thing is cranking.

I am new to the forum. I put that view to set my cell. I'm in Croatia, I have set anemometer on the roof of 10 m height, and sensors are placed on a grass surface at 2 m height. Now I have a half ago some two months bought a new Davis station, and before her I had ws3600 TFA, it is still valid but I have it apart.

That is a sweet setup Moose Whisperer!.
I've got a long way to go before I get my APRS/Wx terminal ready to Display.
and I'm gonna improve my existing home network with a few updates as well.
Again I must say it is very impressive and a nice looking working weather room.
after all it takes people with a Passion and Dedication for Observing and reporting weather data.
I'm currently working on replacing the fans in a computer I already have as when I put the station on the air it will be on 24/7
reporting and recording weather data. which it will be alot of fun to see the weather happening out the window and see the Graphs and Charts change. though I can say I like a combination of both analog & Digital.
and I must say some of the Other weather rooms look pretty good to after all it is a room you work in during severe weather.
Even though working on my setup is when I have some spare time available, which doesn't happen much except for a weekend warrior project or two.
best of luck everyone

Well, here's my freshly modified weather room.
Located in the far western side of my house, about 30-40 metres away from the ISS outside.
First picture. Vantage Vue console can be seen on the left side of the desk, iPad 3 sitting infront of the console. Macbook Pro is to the right of that, it is my normal day to day use computer. Weather computer can be seen in the background running Cumulus & Yawcam.
Here's a close up of the weather PC monitor, running Cumulus for general weather recording with YawCam showing a live webcam preview in the bottom right. As I don't use this computer very often, I only have the monitor and mouse on the desk with both tower and keyboard hidden away under the desk.

Here is my simple setup. On the top shelf is my Vue console to the right with the Cisco E2500 Router in front and the laptop WX PC on the side laying flat and on 24/7 and I connect to it through Team Viewer from the PC below. Second shelf is Bose PC speakers, Canon printer and Motoroloa 6121 Cable Modem. On the bottom is the Midland WR300 radio and my 24in Samsung monitor mounted to the desk. Then at the bottom is my main PC (the PC I just built) as my main PC. Yes thats a granite urn of my pug Jasmine that passed away in August of 2011 on the top shelf at the right. One of these days I'll have more space and want an eyefinity setup.
That puts your PC in perspective. Looks even better! Did you build that unit it's in?
Sorry to hear about the Pug.

Ryan & Will,
Nice job guys! =D>

My weather station is a 15' x 15' room with two 60" office type desks and a computer corner 32" x 32". I use paper work sheets, data records to do a 7am wx report to NWS and CoCoRaHS. Most of my wx hobby is tinkering with equipment. The room has shelving for oscilloscopes, meters, parts bins, and 6 wx station displays. One desk is my workbench. The other desk catches overflow. I have a laptop and a small pro XP (VWS/WLIP/Wxcoder/CoCoRaHS), and a HP 8500 printer. Along another wall are 4 oak tool cabinets.
My sun porch is my dirty work area. I have a drill press on a cabinet stand. One stainless steel top workbench is for stained glass with drawers for glass and tools. An executive desk is for big equipment maintenance, plastic moldmaking and casting. That desk is also for engraving. This area is also for house projects such as chain saw and lawn mower repair.
A great room upstairs has old items that I don't need often.
I have two granite tables and benches outside near the weather sensors. I use that area to modify wx sensors, to grill and eat on special occasions with friends.
I would give up all these toys if a special lady would move in and tell me that I can't have all this clutter.

I'll send my wife. She tells me this all the time.

I don't ever sit in the room where my weather equipment is. That's why I built a website.

This is my latest gear setup. My Vantage Pro2 console is mounted in a different location but links via IP. The weather computer is running Weather Display, Cumulus and Weather Data Transfer Utility for the Envoy8x. The Iomega iConnect on the right runs Meteohub and drives www.portsaintlucie.com (http://www.portsaintlucie.com). Weather Display is driving www.pslwx.com (http://www.pslwx.com). I access the computer through VNC from other areas since I am rarely in the house.

Nice idea with the washing hanger type thing to let the laptop breath so it doesn't over heat! ;) Nice room! :D

Nah, keep the clutter. It's cheaper doesn't answer back.. I'd still have all my clutter is a special lady hadn't of moved in, sigh ;)

My weather room consists of a desk and chair... along with my trusty binder with all my user names, passwords, and notes for everything. Webcam against the window at the top right, and my WD hard drive backups on the shelf. I wish I had more room but that is taken up for other work.

Same here. My netbook, weather radio and console set on an old flower stand in the bedroom. I VNC into it with my laptop when I change anything and use virtual VP to run the software on the second laptop if I want to monitor the conditions direct. Most of the time though just look at the website or use the WeatherLink app on my iPod Touch.

doesn't matter how much you have, what matter is how much you like it ;) . I started with ONE thermometer at home... ](*,)

Well here is my modest setup, started some of this over twenty years ago, first receiving NOAA weather satellites directly using a receiver built from a kit, housed inside an aluminium camera case, complete with a 25 foot mast for use in the field. Now have everything on the desk, and the mast etc setup outside.

This interest is addictive, can be expensive, but above all.....lots of fun.....and you learn at the same time, a great past time for young and old, and the weather is constantly changing.

Nice :-)
Just one question though - do you keep all this on 24/7? And if so, what is the energy consumption of all the screens and devices? :D
-
Hi
Yes, the power bill is low because I use solar heater for hot water and the house only works when I demmand for something, the screens are ''off'' in stand by mode almost all the time and just woke up when I arrive in the chair, with that way of use the entire house are making:

The solar water heater were introduced in september...
Almost 20$ peer month... \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

Nice, though Im just curious:
- what were the initial costs to set up the solar heater (price for heater, installation etc.)
- what is the lifetime of the solar panel

Hi
Around 1200 / 1500$ and the company says probably 30 years... \:D/ \:D/ \:D/
or 4.60$ peer month if you divide total cost / lifetime.
-
OK, so it looks like you will eventually save some money :D Though I would not be so optimistic, these panels usually last more like 15 years

Thats why I didn´t get the panels, only vacuum tubes...this new kind of heater generation is amazing, check this out:

Even with snow and down temperatures you can generate hot water enough to use at home... \:D/

The Davis console and associated streaming hardware is hidden in the basement. I use an old Nexus 10 Tablet running "Weather Station (Beta) for Android. It sits in a prominent spot in the kitchen and co-located with Google Home Max and Charging Station. My wife appreciates the look - no ugly hardware in her kitchen!

Awesome setup, some questions: Can I use this app on android 4.4? where can I get it? I have an old samsung tablet over here, are u using this 24/7 plugged in the receptacle? does it overheat or any problem?
-
Search the Play Store for "Weather Station" by Dromosys. My Nexus 10 has 5.1.1 so can't say if it works with 4.4, but just try it. I removed all other apps from the Nexus 10, keep it plugged in and reduce brightness to 50% or so. It runs pretty reliable, no thermal issues, but sometimes need to restart the App.

This is mine, very modest. The station console and a Raspberry pi to upload the data, which is behind the console. That's it.

My control center where conditions get monitored. I do have 2 other consoles in different locations.

I presume the red crowbar is for quick destruction in case something breaks ;)

Ha! I hadn't seen this topic before. Two Windows computers (one for running scripts and GRLevel3 and one dedicated to Wx Display), Synology NAS (website server), Davis console, router, UPS, main switch, and PoE injector (for the wxcam) are in my basement in the mechanical room. It's a convenient spot because the large white panel in the lower left is where the fiber comes into the house and all the ethernet cables are located. It's also relatively cool year-round. I can monitor everything from my home office PC on the first floor.
