Can I use a GW1000 Outdoors?
« on: April 03, 2020, 12:50:50 PM »
Hi all! I'm being sent an Ecowitt GW1000 and WH31 temperature/humidity sensor to review. I was wondering if I could plug the GW1000 in near a window, and run the 3 in one sensor probe through the window to monitor the temperature, humidity, and pressure outdoors while the WH31 monitors temperature and humidity indoors.

Thanks, Henry

The 3 in one is not weather proof in any conceivable way. Keeping that in mind, I see no reason why you could not do that as long as it's protected.

What would be the point of doing what you say versus just putting the WH31 outdoors and leaving the GW1000 indoors?
I say use the GW1000 indoors as it will be better protected that way. Then put the WH31 outdoors (but protected).
I just don't see what you are gaining by doing it the other way around.

Would the pressure reading be accurate indoors? I want to see if stormy weather is coming based on if the pressure is rising, falling, or holding steady.

Two equally accurate barometers would record the same pressure indoors as outdoors.

Just as kd7eir said, the pressure indoors is the same as the pressure outdoors. No home or building is hermetically shut where the indoor and outdoor pressure would be any different.

Besides the GW1000 does not have the pressure sensor at the end of the pigtail. That end is only a temperature and humidity sensor. The barometric sensor is inside the GW1000 case. This is good to know in properly determining the total elevation of your console to properly calibrate your barometric sensor with local Metar. The elevation of your station would be your ground elevation above sea level plus the height of the console with the barometric sensor to give you the final elevation height of the station.

Weather Station manufactures typically place the barometric sensor at the console rather than on any of the outdoor sensors because there is no need to put it outdoors. It keeps the outdoor sensors less complicated and it protects the barometric sensor that is just as well left indoors with the console.

There's only a goal to put the gw1000 outside, and surely I will do next weeks
as you know, regarding temperature and humidity accuracy, if you are using a high-quality solar radiation shield, or a professional solar radiation shield, like Barani and others, the rule about the sensor is
"more little dimension is better is"
when, especially in a high-quality solar radiation shield, the ability to have the best internal airflow can give the best performance, more little will be the sensor more accurate will be the performances

In fact, one of my future goals is to have a gw1000 outside, in an IP66 protection box, and the little t/rh sensor inside an Apogee ts-100

Mauro63,
But the GW1000 if placed outdoors, the data would still be labeled as indoor. That will not work for any online service.

If you want to run some tests for fun that is one thing. But besides settling your curiosity, I see no point in doing this.

sorry, is not for fun, I'm not interested for other online service

example:
gw1000 outside with sensor inside a professional radiation shield
wh31 outside in another solar radiation shield (ch1)
wh31 outside in another solar radiation shield (ch2)

ecowitt.net will show and store all data, this is enough for a comparision test
