WeatherLink Live Apps are now actually LIVE!
« on: October 11, 2020, 04:30:10 AM »
I just got an update on my Davis WeatherLink Android App. Everything is now LIVE and everything updates just as I would expect in real-time without my having to force updates!

I also noticed that WeatherLink.com on my PC browser no longer has a "Last Updated" time in the upper right corner where it only updated once a minute. It now updates everything LIVE just as it should!

When there is a temp change from the WS, the apps now update LIVE!
When there is a barometric pressure change, the apps now update LIVE!
When there is a humidity change, the apps now update LIVE!
Wind and Rain update LIVE as they always did.

When running the two apps side-by-side they now stay in LIVE lock-step with each other!  =D>

What version of the app do you have now? Mine is 2.1.023, and no still no live updates. Though the 1 minute updates have always worked for me afaik.

Not for me. My app ver is 2.1.023. Nothing is live on it. Even the wind and rain is hit and miss at being live unless I refresh it.

Well just damn!
After I updated my Android app earlier I was elated.
Everything worked in sync for an hour and a half before I made the original post.
And now the Android app is dead again and no longer updates.
My Android app is also version 2.1.023.

However, weatherlink.com on my PC is still apparently updating live.
The "Last Updated" line at the top right is still gone.
Have you guys checked the PC app?

What is this now, their third try to fix bugs caused by a previous update? 4th times a charm.

Good Grief!
Now the Android App is back to updating LIVE again!
I have the PC Browser app running side-by-side with my phone sitting on its charger stand.
It's stayed in close sync for over 20 minutes now.

To be clear, when you save LIVE, do you mean the 2.5 second updates, or the 1 minute updates? The app adds a "Live" tag to the top of the screen when it is receiving 2.5 second wind and rain updates.

Yes, I like the LIVE update for rain every 2.5 seconds. When we have a rain storm I put my phone beside my computer and watch the updates as they happen. If I'm paying this much for a weather station I want to watch it work!  \:D/

Right now, when I'm watching the two apps together, I'm watching when the Temp updates on each, the Pressure updates, etc.

The Temp seems to update every 10 to 15 seconds. The Pressure about every 30 seconds. Solar and UV are 1 minute.

The two apps have been running in lock-step for over an hour now!

The Android app has been working now for an hour and 20 minutes. I've even left the app and reloaded it and it's still working.

However it is concerning that there was a period of time this morning when it wasn't working.

There's apparently a bug of some kind that is causing the Android app to work intermittently.

An interesting thing I've noticed with the Android app is that whenever it updates "anything" the header changes from "Last Updated..." to "Live Update" briefly and then changes back to "Last Updated...".

And while the "Live Update" is showing, ANY changed fields are then updated.

And now the Android app header stays locked on "Last Updated: LIVE" and the only thing that updates is Rain and Wind.

I give up.
This app is flat assed buggy.

Not sure I've looked before, but can't quickly spot a way of seeing the version number on the browser app (not the smartphone app). In principle  it should be the same for everyone but could depend which AWS server you're talking to if they're in the process of large-scale testing of an updated version.

So far the updated weatherlink.com seems to be running without problems using Windows 10 and the new Edge based on Chromium.

It's the Android app that's not reliable.

And believe it or not, I just reloaded the WeatherLink Android app and it's now running correctly once again. I have no confidence for how long.

the app should  be picking up live UDP data over your local WIFI (that the WLL device is also connected to)
maybe that is where the intermittant problem is for you

My router is a year old NetGear Mesh and it has been superb with never a problem. I'm comparing the Android app to not only weatherlink.com on my PC but also Weather Underground rapid-fire that is also being fed data from the WLL through the router connection of my Meteobridge Pro. So I'm seeing the WLL data feed through 3 different router connections. The only feed that is unreliable is the Android app. Would that not point to the Android App as the problem?

The current version of the Android app seems to have a bug for LIVE readings, at least for some users. However, the iPhone app seems fine. We're really waiting for Davis to release a new version of the Android app.

My Android App was updated this morning to version 2.1.023.
That's why I was testing it, to see if it was now working.

If you look at the Davis WeatherLink app on Google Play, you will see that version 2.1.023 was released on Oct 9, 2020.

Unfortunately this is the latest release as of two days ago.

The good thing is that Davis are on the right track. It works perfectly for about two hours at a time. Now if they can figure out what kills it, I'll be quite pleased. The app is quite useable if all your going to do is load it, look at it briefly, and that's it. I'm one of those that wants it to actually work the way it should.

Yes. There it is in "tool tips".  8-)

I'm curious as to why it's still there if individual fields are apparently now being updated separately. How are you seeing updates now happening with the updated Internet version?

I don't think anyone else is seeing a new version of the browser app. Certainly there seems to be no change to those of us seeing data from the EU servers of AWS. Nor is there any new update for the iPhone app (from v2.1.16) that I can see.

I'll be surprised if there's any change to the data refresh pattern from WLL - that would imply a major unannounced and undocumented change to the local API - so AFAIAA the standard remains as wind and rain every ~2.5 secs, other parameters every 60 secs (obviously in LIVE mode only).

All that said, it's obviously Monday morning of a new week in California, so conceivably there might be something new forthcoming during the week.

I can't imagine that there would be any change in the API required.
I say that because my Meteobridge Pro is currently reading its data from the WLL and delivering it rapid-fire it to Weather Underground.

Meteobridge shows this update frequency:
2.5 second updates for wind.
10 second updates for rain.
30 second updates for temperature.
30 second updates for humidity.
30 second updates for barometric pressure.
60 second updates for Solar.
60 second updates for UV.

I would expect Davis apps to automatically update at those times and to stay current just as Weather Underground now does.

The web site updates once a minute, and all the values are refreshed. The WLL only uploads to WeatherLink.com every minute, so that is the fastest it could update.

Unless that is Davis could add code to also talk to the local API on your network. But that would be quite a change involving discovery protocols etc.
