I've been a weather enthusiast my entire life and have never heard of a "bomb cyclone". Am I alone here, and also is this just more getting the public to find a reason to not trust their pubic advisors when conditions don't meet "bomb criteria" (other than pressure drop) with such a ludicrous label?

Ha! Bomb Cyclone. We get these nor’easters all the time up here. Always have and I’m sure we always will. They’ve never been referred to as ‘bomb cyclones’ before, and nothing has changed...

It’s amazing how crazy the media makes people get when they use terminology like this! I keep telling everyone that this is just another typical strong east coast storm, and nothing more. People are being led to believe that this will be a storm like they’ve never seen before, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Bomb cyclone is kind of catchy however

It is a little used term from back in the 80's, IMO it sounds kinda silly and probably why it never caught on. I went hunting for it and found this wiki on it's root https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explosive_cyclogenesis

And of course TWC named it.  It's Winter Storm Grayson.  :::smh:::

All of y'all in the northeast batten down the hatches.

And of course a tabloid named it.

Fixed that for ya'.

I can't find any credible reference to the term.  The lS article above references another tabloidist 'Maue | weather.us'.  The WP article they quote is more vague.
