Wind Vector Calibrations - Gladstone/MADIS QC's
« on: December 21, 2024, 12:18:14 PM »
My Ambient WS 5000 sensor has routinely failed since installation 4 weeks ago with respect to the wind vector QC parameters on Gladstone/MADIS due to L3 Spatial Consistency. All other sensor readings pass perfectly. That said, I'm assuming that it is due to the fact that the ultrasonic wind sensor is located only 3.21 meters (7') above ground level and situated next to an open field 25' away from my two story barn. Given that the recommended siting requirements for my sensor is 3-4 x the height of my barn or 75'-100' away from the structure at a recommended height of 33', I acknowledge the failure as being due to my stations location. That said, I re-calibrated the wind speed gain on my console from 7' to 33' using 1.41. But now my question after this long winded preface.... why bother to recalibrate wind speed at all when 1) it won't affect the wind vector failure, and 2) why should I care about the wind speed at 33' when I'm only 5'10?

Welcome to the forum.  The wind analysis has had issues for a while.  Look here https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=42389.msg432654#msg432654

Don't put too much stock into that testing.  Remember you are being compared to your neighbors for that test.  Just your location can throw off the wind direction enough to "fail" their testing vs your neighbors.  And if you don't have any neighbors within a few miles, it's just not a fair comparison.

I gave up looking at my Gladstone numbers awhile ago.  You just end up chasing perfection, and it doesn't happen.  Life was fine when you had one clock.  It was always right and you didn't question it much.  But when you bought another clock, you find out your first one was off.  But it really wasn't.  Just your perception.

Thank you CamarilloWX and 92merc. I think seeing the "thumbs down," icons and the big red "X" remind me of my math grades in high school. The wind vector anomalies aren't helped by the fact that I sit on 1.25 acres literally in the middle of town soccer fields on the east, south and west sides and a cornfield on the north side. The wind currents are crazy and there's no reasonable comparisons of my station to the neighboring ones within a few miles of mine.

P.S. CamarilloWX...your website is fantastic! What a great job. - DAM53
