weather.com - We're On There
« on: December 14, 2018, 09:34:31 PM »
I guess I might be late to the party, but it seems that The Weather Channel is already using our data.  I wasn't aware of that.

Easiest way to see it is google search "forecast [your zip code]".  The top link will likely be a weather.com URL, click it.  Once there, click "Maps" up on the right side of the menu bar, that will derive a map of your area.  Now go to the left edge toolbar, the third icon down (looks like 3 slider controls) is "Feature Data", click it. Under the "Personal Weather Station" heading, turn on one or more of the  switches shown, and there you are.

Sure enough. Everyone is making money from our data but us.

Yes, IBM owns The Weather Company (weather.com) which owns Wunderground.com too.  Weather.com ingests both MADIS (CWOP) and Wunderground station data.

I remember when I got my station in 03. There were 2 other stations in the area. Just now I counted 59.

When I moved here in 2006, I was the 4th station registered with WU. Today, there are over 100 registered stations in my city of 100,000. Obviously, many of those stations have been retired in the last 12 years. In addition, some of the registrations are duplicates for various reasons. So, I did a quick check and found that only 22 stations are actually reporting this morning.

There are now 5 around school. 10 years ago there was me.

Some may be former students. Or just people interested because of what I do.

You can't phase me-I teach Middle School.
It's not you-It's WU.

That map is kind of neat when you use the animation, especially with temp and wind selected.  However quite slow when a larger map area is shown.

When I got my station on WU in 2008 there were 4 or 5 shown in the London city and county area.  Then a few years ago it was dozens, now back down to about half of that after the Netatmo's and such have dropped off.

Thanks for posting,
Paul
