Hello all,

I joined this forum just to get in on this conversation.  I would love to buy one of these, but from the reading I've done, it seems like the battery doesn't work below around 4 degrees.    I'm in Wisconsin and it was -10 when I woke up this morning, and I'd like my weather station to be able to tell me the daily low.

Is this really a limitation of the unit?  Does anyone else have any experience using one in a northern climate?

The battery specs are really confusing.  They've been changing since the product was announced in 2014, so you see different numbers in different places.

In July 2014, there was a Kickstarter update that announced an upgraded battery that goes down to -40F.  I think I heard somewhere that the battery "upgrade" made it into the current shipping model, but I can't confirm.

Here's the update from July 2014:

Quote
Optional Battery Upgrade - Withstand Lower Temperature to -40°F (-40°C)

When we think of putting BloomSky every location on this planet, it includes those places with extreme low temperature during winter. We've gotten many inquires in low temperature outside BloomSky’s operating range -13°F to 149°F (-25°C to 65°C). We want to make it work for you. We did tons of research in seeking for a high quality and high performance battery for BloomSky. And finally we settled with a premium battery solution: temperature range from -40°F to 149°F(-40°C to 65°C)!  Upgraded battery offers a more specialized line of cells that are optimized for low temperature performance at -40°F(-40°C). This is absolutely incredible!

As a practical matter, some have posted stations that are getting down there in temps.  Here's one that is currently at -22F.

Thanks for the helpful reply!  I emailed BloomSky support and they said it only functions down to -4F, but perhaps this was a typo?  I will clarify with support.

You also make a good point about just finding models that are registering low temperatures.

Thanks again!

I just heard back from support and they indicated that it is only designed to function down to -4F and that taking it below that could potentially void the warranty.  Now I'm really not sure what to do.  It's strange that support is so firm on the restriction, when everyone else seems to think it's not a big deal.

Check out the other thread about how your Bloomsky is holding up.  Several have reported temps as low as -11.

Received an email today saying it will be 4-6 weeks before my unit arrives. Apparently they ran out of inventory due to the free giveaway.
Here's the email.

Dear Dave,
Thank you for contacting BloomSky. Due to the massive success of the Community Outreach Program we have run out of inventory and waiting for out next shipment. We project that this will take 4-6 weeks to get. We ask for your patience as we will ship your order out to you as soon as we get it.

If there were any images today you will see them tomorrow, as the video is always yesterday's.

Yes and the pressure is now showing up too.   Looks like it takes a day to sync up with everything.

Cool for now i have it staked in the ground.. im surrounded by stupid trees so its hard to find a good spot.. I was gonna try the roof but the clamp they sent me with it is too dang hard to put a screw and screwdriver to it while holding it at the same time.. >__>

Glad its working.  I've moved mine around until I found the right spot and will probably move it again once the season changes for a different view.
I currently have a pipe around 4 feet high pounded into the grass and the BS stake is just inserted into the top of it.  Actually works well.

So the BloomSky is very flexible on where you can put it.

That location on the roof ought to make for some accurate temperature readings :)

It's not too bad just 4 degrees over from what my other weather station says. Plus I mainly just want it for the cam :P plus the mounting instructions it came with said above the roof was best.
