Lost My Gold Star...While Munching Popcorn
« on: September 22, 2019, 09:19:07 PM »
So, for the past several days my WU page has been sans gold star. I’ve reviewed all the stats on their pages and everything is in order. Perhaps except for the fact that I’ve reported EXTREME rainfalls for our area. Yup, poor WU doesn’t realize that Seattle and surrounds even has downpours in addition to the daily drizzle. There isn’t an emoticon to reflect “embarrassed for you” WU, so I’ll use this one  :???:

In the last week or so, each of my three pws that had goldstars lost this coveted award. My guess is that WU is doing away with the idea. Too bad, if properly administered, a great idea. However, lately the concept has not been properly administered.

I see no evidence that WU is doing away with Gold Stars. I lose and gain my Gold Star all the time. I know the loss is not due to my station changing anything. The loss is probably due to WU resetting their servers and changing who knows whatever code, because we all know they are experimenting on the live system rather than in a test environment.

I have a Gold Star at this very moment....for all 4 of my WU IDs. What is strange is that at times one or more of the stations will lose the star but there is sometimes one or two that retain the star. That right there is proof that it isn't me, it isn't my data. Because all 4 of my WU IDs are the exact same weather data. The reason I have multiple IDs is just for testing different consoles, and different weather software. Therefore it makes no sense when one ID loses its star and another doesn't.

The reason I believe our friends at WU are finally killing the Goldstar concept is the column previously designated  “quality check” or words to that effect, has been dropped from WU. If you log in to your WU account and then click on “my devices” that column has been deleted.

Yes, the column goes away and then comes back. Seen it several times over several months.

By the way you might might to black out your station keys in the screenshot!

My mistake. A Goldstar on one of my pws has been restored and the “quality” column has also returned. If I didn’t know better, I would have assumed WU was being run by the Three Stooges! How unfortunate. WU used to be a quality site where folks could see numerous pws and grades (the Goldstar) than meant something. Now it seems like chaos and disorganization reigns.

IBM only budgeted for a few so we have to time-share them.

I have a feeling that the WU Gold Star periodically disappears because the reported wind direction/speed doesn't correlate well with whatever algorithm WU uses to determine what it "should" be. Taking away the star could be valid if the anemometer siting isn't close to published standards. A faulty siting will typically not be noticeable if the winds are predominantly in the 12 - 15 mph range and above but when you've got days of lighter winds, a bad siting can produce vastly incorrect data; thus, a loss of the star.

I think someone from WU mentioned they were changing the data points used to determine the stars awhile back. It's probably buried in one of the WU threads from a few months back.

Unless something has changed, the only "supposed" parameter they check for is air temperature, and frankly think that is/was a load of crap. To think that they check for wind would make their heads explode (the wind is by far the hardest to "verify"), they can't even come close to running what they have. The star has been and always will be an absolute worthless gimmick.

Ray, you're good as Gold, and didn't disappear for me even after several page changes,

Enjoy,

On the fast train to mediocrity. Every 2 weeks it is there for a few hours then gone. Middle of the day, calm, no rain, measured pressure the same and temperature nearly the same as nearby stations. Sigh................... :???:

Racer3 and Paul, thank you both. Unfortunately both on an iPad and Windows 10 laptop it appears briefly and then disappears. Not sure how to fix it.
