Title: Fall 2016
Post by: zackdog on August 26, 2016, 12:22:44 PM
Fall has arrived.  Some of the aspens have begun to turn yellow.  I have had 14 days with an over night low in the 30°s so far in August, but none below freezing.  The peaks have been white with snow twice in the last week.

I love Fall.

I have no interest in snow and am not fond of 30s, but I'm about done with The Muggies, so I'll welcome October.

October is when the snows start staying and temps dip to stay around the zero mark before they plunge below it in November. Aspen and Birch here been yellowing up since mid august. Getting close to hibernation time.

Hi John - just had to ask - is that "your" hibernation or the animals?  ;)

It is both me and the  bears.  Most the other critter are active all winter. Hopefully the lynx and fox in the area will whittle down the rabbit population a bit this winter. With rabbit population high so is tulimeria or rabbit fever. Nasty stuff if you get it thru cleaning and skinning a rabbit. Also it pasted along into dogs and cats where they come in contact with sick bunny. Hope the cow moose and her two calves stick around like they been.

First freeze this morning for the 16/17 winter season. Got down to 31. Now to enjoy the brief Indian summer. Was a bit cool last night as was out watching northern neon hoping to get some pixs. They stayed in what I call ghost lights where the gas glows but never fires up. After I put camera away about 0230 crawled into bed and looked out window and the lights where going crazy.
Never fails. Laird there in bed watching them till I fell to snore land.

Last day of August goes out with an overnight low at 29 deg. Looks like be digging taters this week end. NWS saying temps for weekend above normal with lows into high 30's. But these clear nights are allowing \emps to drop more here at our area due to micro climes.

It's been one of the warmer and drier summers that I can remember in a while here in Maine. The weaker trees (mostly maples and some birches) are starting to turn colors here as well, but it won't be another few weeks before things really start to pop. Peak foliage here in West-Central Maine is late September through mid October.

We've only been as low as 45F so far this month. Should see our first frost sometime soon hopefully. I'm a big fan of the cooler weather, so this summer has been tough with high heat and humidity throughout (by Maine standards that is!)  ;)

Iowa has been quite different, a lot of rain and heat. So far this month we've had 6.70 inches of rain.   More rain this weekend.    Depends on who you ask, but winter probably will be harsh in this climate, with a lot of moisture and with that snow and cold.   I hate ice.

Send some of that cool weather here! Our low this morning in Leeds, Maine was 52F, with the low only dropping down to around 47F tonight. We're still waiting for that first forecasted low in the 30's, and I can't wait for it to happen! I did go for a hike up one of our local 4,000FT mountains earlier today however and it was only in the mid 40's for a high.

Apparently (I wasn't awake to see them) the Northern Lights were spectacular in our area last night too. Here is a photo that a local meteorologist shared from a weather viewer here in Western Maine. I'll have to keep my eye out for them more often!

Its crazy over here....

So in August we had daily maximums even as low as 12C (53F), which is very rare. And now? As Im writing this, it is sunny and temperature 33C (92F). What a nice fall... I think I should post about current weather here in the Summer 2016 thread...

Same for us here in Western Maine, about 3 weeks away. We had a high temp of 88F yesterday which was close to a record high! Still hasn't felt much like fall here yet, but next week highs should be in the 60's with lows in the 30's and 40's. I'm ready for the cooler weather and bright fall colors for sure!

Ocala I'll share my 29 degrees with you.  After last rain temps dropped again into the 20's. Daytime tps are high 40's to low 50's with some mentioning of snow in next week forecast. Sunday and Monday they are forecasting 50 mph gap winds along the Alcan and my zonal forecast. First stay around snow is generally around Oct. 5th but has come in mid Sept. some years.

We're in that odd transitional time that isn't really Summer or Fall.  Low this morning was in the low 50s, but highs this week will be upper 80s to near 90.  It gets hot later in the day and doesn't last as long, then falls off quicker after dark.

And the only Wooley Worm I've seen this year so far was an odd light brown, almost butter yellow color.  I'm not sure I recall seeing one that color before.

Been down in Sun City (Phoenix area) last week and half, still low 100's. I have a choice of relocating here but just can't live in this kind of heat. Its nuts why over 4 million people choose this climate.

Speaking as one of those 4 million folks I would have to agree to a point, but when January comes and most of the country is walking around in jackets, parkas and heavier clothes we'll be in shirt sleeves with the occasional flannel or windbreaker.  So far this month it's gotten down to 66° but we've got a possibility of moisture with the remnants of Hurricane Paine so it may get cooler.

But I'm with Weatherhost waiting for October - that's when things really get nice around here!

Wow, the weather lady, Emily Sutton, at KFOR-4, Oklahoma City shows off weather model showing a very rainy weekend in Oklahoma thru 1pm Tues., especially in central areas of the state. If the approaching cold front stalls out for a while as forecast, the more the model will be accurate. It will be followed by the first cool spell of the fall with lows in the 50s.

One thing I dont like about this time of the year here (and same thing happens around the same time in March) is that during the day you feel like wearing a T-shirt and in the evening a  winter jacket. Over the day we have these days temperatures exceeding 20C (approximately 70F), and during the night/in the evening, they drop close to freezing point. So if you are like me going to work in the morning and then coming back home at 11PM, you are either hot during the day, cold in the evening or you have a big bag to which you put all the extra clothes...

Days shorting up  as and temperatures are dropping. Highs been in mid 40"s and last night temp  dropped to 24 deg.  Leave are about all off the trees  so if we get snow as they are forcasting it will cut down on tree breakage. Snow flurries  in Fairbanks and  it clouding up here. First stay around winter snow normally hits  first week of Oct.

I don't know how many are familiar with web worms in the trees.  They come from eggs laid on leaves by moths.  When they hatch in late Summer/early Fall, they spin a web that takes over the end of branches to protect the worms while they feed.  Some trees can get almost covered by them.  Ugly as all get out.  I have a few trees that usually get quite a few of them.  When out walking or driving, the trees look like they have clouds of them.

This year, I've only seen a very few along the roads and none at all on my trees.

When I was a kid we used to have pecan trees at our house and I remember my father making a torch from a gas-soaked rag and a long metal pole to get up and burn out all those webs.  Haven't seen any in I don't know how long but I remember they were a pain to get rid of.

The Euro has freezing low temperatures as far south as the South Dakota/Nebraska border for this upcoming Friday morning.

Nothing close to freezing yet in my neck of the woods, but the drought has already begun to drop the leaves here. That's a disappointment for the tourism industry, as the fall colors are a big deal around here.

It's been nice to finally break the humid cycle around here. We had dew points in the lower to middle 70s practically all summer, and finally broke that about a week ago.

Definitely looking forward to the cooler weather.  8-)

My allergies LOVE cold weather, however in Oklahoma, my favorite is the hard freeze (kills ragweed).  In my neck of the woods, that usually averages out to be around the first two weeks of November.

What’s different about northern Nebraska the ragweed doesn't seem as bad here as the deserts of northern Arizona. My allergies have almost gone since moving to Ne. even though it’s much wetter and greener. I think it was the Russian thistle (Tumble weeds) I was most allergic. Not sure it’s even considered a rag weed but fall pollen was really bad and once the first freeze occurred allergies cleared up.

Interesting how the weather systems have favored western Oklahoma with so much rain this year that it has been kept clear of any kind of drought now.  The other map from late Sept. is an example of how those rain bearing systems have tended to pretty much exhaust themselves out by the time they arrive to central Oklahoma as in Oklahoma City and my own area.   Further to the east, Tulsa hasn't been getting its fair share, either.  Another rainy period is to set in for a few days starting Tuesday.

Wow, it's October and it warmed up to 91 in Stillwater today, or at least in my backyard.   With a high chance of thunderstorms forecast for Thursday night, hopefully they won't turn real mean.  Last night, it rained nearly 3 inches in the first county north of me.   Only .20" here.  So would settle for it getting a little meaner with the rain. The annual amount rate is still running behind here.

Hey Farm Talk long time. Yes it is normal for the interior to get that range of temps espically with an omega sitting  smack dab on top of us.  Nice clear nights  with  good displays of  northern lights. Lay in bed watching them  move across the sky from North to the east.
From  mid September  to now  we can get cold and snow. Last year at this time had 8 inches of snow on the ground.

LOL... when I started reading your post I just automatically thought "18 degrees in the morning under clear sky" - thats pretty nice and warm :D Obviously when you mentioned the heavy frost I realized you are probably not talking in deg C :D

We actually had a very warm period up until last week, two days was even absolute record. However on Saturday a cold front arrived and it got much colder and very quickly, so while last week we had even 26C (80F) during the day, now we have daily max around 8C (46F) and during the night close to the freezing point, which is not absolutely rare, but definitely below the average and quite a difference from last week. It just jumped from summer to basically winter... and in addition it is drizzling most of the day, totally overcast and very windy.

WOW, and I thought 91 was real hot here on Wednesday.  It came a stormy downpour here this morning and got a bit over two inches of rain.  But that was far from the heaviest.  A location in a county to the north of me got nearly 7 inches.  So a flood watch is now out for 5 northern Oklahoma counties, including my own until 10pm Thursday.  Fortunately, the outlook map has strongest storms in eastern Kansas and a little to the northeast of there:

56 here Monday morning. I know that's not cold to you guys but it felt dam good after a hot summer.
Of course that first front usually spells the end of the rainy season.
Pretty much just Chamber of Commerce weather here for the next 6 months.

That would be far too freaky cold in north central Oklahoma for this time of year.  People would be wondering if it's really global cooling that we're worried about.  I don't ever intend to, but it would be  something I'd have to try to  get used to if I moved to Colorado Springs.

Cool night last night 17 degrees. as of noon we were at 25 now at 41.   NWS says  we are going on 3 weeks late for snow. Latest first snow for fairbanks is Oct 30 set in 1918. Must of had  global warming back then.  Starting this week end  temps expecet to drop as cold air slides west from Canada and impacts the Alaskan interior.

It has been over 10 days now that we are well below average, in fact the whole central Europe is. I dont mind cold, but what is a bit annoying is that I seriously have not seen the sun in those last ten days. All day completely overcast and almost constantly drizzling, occasionally raining. It is usually below any measurable value, but nothing really enjoyable. Due to the cloudiness there is also very little temperature amplitude, practically no difference between daily max and nightly min.

Attached is an image of temperature anomaly

P.S. And despite the fact it has been colder than usual for the past two weeks, I still believe in global warming :D :D :D

The Indian summer as they call it around here (when temperatures fluctuate a bunch in the spring and fall) is in full effect. I was only in the upper 50s today, but will be back in the middle 80s by Tuesday. Average high temperatures this time of year in central West Virginia is in the middle 70s.

Frost advisories are up for a good chunk of the state tonight. It was 36 last Monday morning up in the mountains where I went hiking at.

Next week at the 850mb level temps are expected to drop by 15 to 17 deg C.  So looks like the prediction of minus temp s next week may just form up. No snow yet in any forecast. Stay warm out there.

I might as well believe in global warming.  Oklahoma City has a record high low Monday morning.   The low was 73.  The previous high low was 68.  Average low is 52.  This afternoon had 90s in much of central and western parts of the state and as much as 100, or more, in the far northwest.  91 here.  Record highs into the mid 90s have happened before in Oklahoma City during the first three weeks in October.  But never in recorded history has it gotten into the 100s during that month.  In the map below, 102 represents the hottest temperature ever recorded so late in the year in Oklahoma.

Tuesday, a cold front will come and bring highs down to the upper 70s with less wind.  No storms expected.   A stronger cold front will move through Wednesday night with rain more likely.  The rest of October has highs mostly in the 70s with no early fall freezes on the horizon.   First fall freeze often arrives during the first week of November.  No more mowing the grass then, if it wasn't already done.

Start the snow blower?   I recently heard about that subject.  Recently, a friend of mine asked me to accompany her to her 40th Stillwater High School reunion.  One of the graduates there told me of how rough it was getting used to winters in Wisconsin.  When the Stillwater Mercury Marine plant, where he worked closed in 2011, he elected to transfer to the company HQ plant in Fond du Lac, WI.  He said Wisconsin winters have been mighty rough getting used to and that everybody had to have a snow blower to survive.  Years ago, I had worked at Mercury Marine for several years,  and was gladder than usual I didn't elect to make working there a permanent career.  Mercury Marine makes boat motors.

I mentioned this in the other forum about climate change as well...

It really depends, at higher elevations in the mountains there is already plenty of snow now (about 2 inches).

I live in one of the lowest and warmest parts of the country and in addition in the second largest city, with significant heat island effect. Nevertheless, we do get snow regularly. However, when I was "young" (I mean like 10, so about 20yrs ago) we had snow for like 1-2 months straight and went sledging often. These days.... as I said previously, since I guess 2000 at least, there is maybe a few days with some very little snow on ground, but hardly anything. And it usually melts very quickly. In 2012 we had quite cold span, but it was also an anomaly... the winter was very warm and then suddenly in the mid February, it got extremely cold (well below freezing point, there was even a week when the daily maxium did not get over -10C) and that lasted even to beginning of March, but there was not much precipitation, so also no snow.

The weather here currently more or less what you would expect at this time of the day - mostly cloudy/overcast, today raining most of the day, daily max around 10 C (50F) and at night around freezing point.
Next week however a cold front is expected to arrive on Tuesday and temperatures dropping significantly below the average, at night as low as -8 C (17F), and snow even at the lowest elevations, which is rather unusual. We normally dont have temperatures too much below freezing point in the first half of Nov.

My mean temperature for October was 40.9° F, which is 4.0° above my twenty year average but is not a record.  In 2003 the mean was 42.9° F.  November has started out very mild, with a current mean of 37.1° F and predicted highs in the low to mid-50s for the next ten days.  My twenty year average for November is 25.8° F, so the last half of the month will have to be extremely cold to get down to average.

Our posts dont contradict each other ;)
I do believe we will have another ice age and I do agree it probably isnt too far away (though definitely not something you or me should worry about if we assume cryoconservation wont become possible), but that does not contradict the fact that right now, the Earth is warming up and we are in a period of global warming (note carefully my wording, I did not say this is caused by humans, I personally think it is highly likely, but not 100%).

Don't make me post the historic world temps again. It has been much warmer some 1-4C globally just before last ICE AGE.... All Americans aren't stupid and do know what the historical data says.

I think you need to move that 100% to 50% if really serious and want to investigate and ask real questions what's going on. It's so clear to me...One thing we agree on, no-doubt we will go into another ice age.

Absolutely correct, it has been MUCH warmer in the past, but the change was not so rapid and dont you think it is slightly suspicious that right at the moment we largely increased our CO2 and other GHG emmisions, the temps shot up? The CO2 conc. was also higher in the past, but the change wasnt so fast.

And we are not talking about warming, also the number of extreme events etc. it is all interconnected (butterfly effect). It is not just about the averages.

Still significantly below average here (around -6 deg compared to normal). Tonight we had -6 C at night, which is very unusual for this time of the year. The temps around this time dont normally go below 0 too much.

First snow.... I just came from work and you could be ice skating on the sidewalks... it started snowing at about 8PM and when I went home from work at 10PM there was a thin layer of snow, but the temperature is just below freezing point and it is now rather raining than snowing, so there is ice layer below the snow :)

5AM, 65 degrees.

Yesterday, November 17 clocked in at 22 degrees above normal.  The same date in 2014 clocked in at 22 degrees below normal with 2 inches of snow.  Each of the other years since I started keeping track were above normal (2013 +17, 2015 +16), yet the dates within a week either way have been below normal.  Something odd about this transitional period between seasons.

After a 20.9°C beautiful sunny day yesterday looks like our summer is over and we bypassed fall and going directly in to winter:
Quote
Watches 4:48 AM EST Saturday 19 November 2016
Snow squall watch in effect for:

  • London - Parkhill - Eastern Middlesex County
  • Strathroy - Komoka - Western Middlesex County
Snow squalls are expected to develop. Under the snow squall bands, visibilities will be significantly reduced due to the heavy snow combined with blowing snow, and snow will quickly accumulate.

Lake effect snow likely beginning tonight and continuing Sunday..

After the record setting warm spell of the past couple of days, a significant change in the weather is expected as much colder arctic air blasts in over the mild waters of the Great Lakes tonight and Sunday. As a result, conditions will quickly become favourable for snow squalls to develop tonight and continue through Sunday.

Local snowfall amounts in the heaviest snow squalls of 10 to 20 cm are expected overnight and Sunday. In addition, strong and gusty northwest winds will whip up freshly fallen snow, resulting in sudden very low to at times nil visibility in blowing snow.

There is a possibility that a strong snow squall off of Lake Huron may become nearly stationary across the region Sunday into Sunday night. If this happens, local snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm are possible by Monday morning.

Driving conditions will quickly deteriorate tonight after the flurries and snow squalls arrive. Motorists should consider adjusting their travel plans accordingly.

Latest indications suggest that snow squalls will continue through Sunday night before slowly weakening to flurries on Monday.
Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Road closures are possible.

Snow squall watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the formation of bands of snow that could produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities.

Enjoy?
Paul

Wow... what a range!

Im particularly surprised by that 98 because that is even close to the record warmest here. The absolute highest temp for the Czech Republic is 104, but that wasn't where I live, here it is more like 101/102. And I myself have measured over 100 about twice.

That minimum of course is something I cant even imagine, but Im not surprised given where you live :D I actually like cold as well, I hate hot weather. But here it hardly ever gets below -5F, which you probably think is absurd :D I think the coldest I have ever experienced was -15F, but that is very long time ago, usually in the winter we have daily max around freezing point or 40F, at night it drops to 15-20 F.

Quote
Warnings 11:38 AM EST Sunday 20 November 2016
Snow squall warning in effect for:

  • London - Parkhill - Eastern Middlesex County
  • Strathroy - Komoka - Western Middlesex County
Snow squalls are expected. Under the snow squall bands, visibilities will be significantly reduced due to the heavy snow combined with blowing snow, and snow will quickly accumulate.

Local snowfall amounts of 15 cm within 12 hours are possible in heaviest snow squalls today and tonight.

Snow squalls have developed over Lake Huron and are extending inland over parts of Southwestern Ontario. Strong northwest winds with gusts up to 70 or 80 km/h will also accompany these snow squalls resulting in reduced visibility in blowing snow.

Generally the highest amounts anticipated are 20 cm however there is a chance that a strong snow squall off Lake Huron may become nearly stationary across the region. If this happens, local snowfall amounts in excess of 30 cm are possible by Monday morning.

Outside of the stronger bands, snowfall amounts will be much less, however, roads may be icy at times.

The squalls will slowly begin to weaken on Monday.
Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations.

Minus 16 this morning with an trace of snow. By the way  during last ice age  the interior of Alaska was Ice free and an grassland. all the ice was south of here along the coast. Lot of mastodon, and mammoth bones here to prove it.  All found during the mining operations. where the river bottoms where dredge , also most of the hills here are made up from glacial silt  blown in from the  deposits  around the  bowl. We also have babe the  blue ox  from that period  well preserved sitting up in the UAF  Museum.

I walk 4 miles nearly every morning, weather and other conditions permitting, plus another 1 1/2 or so in the afternoons.  If I can't do it outside, I try to do 30 minutes on a treadmill inside which seems to take as much or more out of me.

Sounds cold. Why do you list the highest temperature in the last 24 hours, but the lowest temperature over the last 12 hours? Just curious.

I had a couple of Christmas lights come off the roof, so I had to go out today and reconnect them.  Warm, sunny, no wind, snow melted.
There were two house flies on the room, happy as can be. Even though it has been "cold" It is not enough to get rid of the flies and the geese. We have had just a few hours below 32F and a few snow events.

Well from 18 below we warmed up yesterday to  minus 7  then plunged to 16 below  last night before the southerly flow aloft  started to bring temps back up. Today we are  getting light snow.
also that storm I mention in the Chain  at false Pass they clocked  winds of 100 mph.

Check out the altimeter in N. Nebraska Pressure: 29.08 inHg. This is really low, never experienced pressure drops like this in Arizona. Shows how accurate the Davis Vue pressure is also dead on with airport.

For anyone interested the VP2 console is reading higher (29.14 in) because it doesn't have altimeter adjustment.
This is why some of us use the Vue as main console.

Someone in this Forum suggested I set my elevation on the VP2 console to zero, then adjust my barometric pressure to that reported by a nearby airport and all should be good. I did, now my pressure is very close to altimeter readings reported by nearby reliable stations.

Probably me. It will remain fairly close until you get into real high or low pressure as Randy is seeing now. The stronger the high or low, the greater the error.

If a superior product does comes out, which has all the bells and whistles that you have, you could sell your station on Ebay, like someone in this Forum has pointed out. However, if you do, I hope it isn't as ugly as the one being recently mentioned!

here is what is in store in the near future for us. this  from our forecast discussion.

850 mb temperatures from around -20C to colder than -25C will
continue to cover most of the northern Alaska mainland through
Friday, with the exception of the southeast interior which could
see temperatures moderating to around -10C Tuesday and Tuesday
night, but with colder air returning Wednesday.

Surface temperatures will be governed by both the temperatures
aloft and cloud cover. Temperatures in inland areas with clear
skies could fall to 25 to 40 below. However, RH progs from the
current model runs suggest that cloud cover will persist over
most areas under the trough aloft and this will serve to mitigate
temperatures at the surface. The greatest likelihood of clear
skies and colder surface temperatures is expected to be in areas
near and west of the upper trough axis.

It is too early for snow! Call somebody to complain. I am still trying to fix a drainage issue from last year. A couple underground gutter extension drains froze last year and when melting on the roof occurred in March, the frozen gutter extensions wouldn't let the water come down the gutter downspouts, rather it flowed into my house!

I was born and raised until age 10 in metric (remember well the little cups we had in school, from very small to 1 litre, each 10 times larger than the other, and how easy it was to remember).  Then to the imperial system in Canada and learning an inch being the King's thumb and a yard his reaching-out arm...  #-o until metrication in the 1970s when gas went from about $1 to 25c :-s  and we could drive 100 per/h 8)

It took me about 20 years to quit converting in my mind from metric to imperial, and now totally quite comfortable with metric, except understanding L/100 vs mpg ;)

So actually you can get used to it, and like it \:D/

Enjoy,

It took me about 20 years to quit converting in my mind from metric to imperial, and now totally quite comfortable with metric, except understanding L/100 vs mpg ;)

So actually you can get used to it, and like it \:D/

Enjoy,
Paul

Ain't going to happen in the US in my life time (I am retired). Probably unfortunate, but there is no impetus in the US to change. Until an impetus results, no change will result.

we would got metric here  but the cost of retooling everything would be to great and set back  the industry.  lot of ships I sail on had Metric and British Whitworth  then throw in SAE and you have an mess.

As of 0100 we hit 30 Below here.  getting close to that spot where C and F is the same.  Maybe this week if no down slope winds  come into play.

I totally understand that you are used to it.

But I have to disagree with you and say that metric indeed does make more sense. Simply because it is based on multiples. Not just the 0 and 100 on the Celsius scale, but also other measurements.

Just a few examples:

100cm = 1m
1m = 1000km
1000g = 1kg
1000kg = 1 ton

vs

1ft = 12in
1mi = 5280 in
16 ounces = 1 pound

etc etc....

As far as F vs C , I'll take F. The US resisted the larger size of each degree Celsius so to eliminate fractions and increase the granularity of the scale thought the F scale was better. I agree with this theory and glad at least for temperature we stayed on the Fahrenheit scale.

Yes, I sort of agree with that. You could also say that in F, the 100 I think corresponds to human body temperature and the point you made also makes sense.

however with the other measurements (length, weight etc.) metric just is much easier to calculate with, there is no doubt about that. If for example I asked you what is 5.4 pounds in ounces or I asked you what is 350g in kg, surely one would be much easier for you to calculate in your head.

Believe that was the thinking 100F body temperature actually 98.6F and the other end 0F was the coldest the Germany Physicist Fahrenheit experienced in his town.

The metric system otherwise is better IMO.

T-stat says 68.

Walking around the yard, I'm seeing new fresh growth on the apple tree and a couple of other plants.

"Nice" :D

I have said this before, I really like cold, winter, dark.... but I must say I have never experienced a temp below -20F. Probably the lowest I remember was somewhere around -15F. But I guess it probably doesnt make that much difference, once it gets below certain threshold, you just feel..... very cold :D It is just different in that you get frost bite much faster.

As of today we are under 5 hours of daylight . sun comes up around 1000 and sets around 1500.  not much chance for sun tanning.

LOL ... Im sure the lack of sun light is the only reason why you dont go out tanning at -30F :D

There is a benefit to temperatures this cold. You can easily defrost your refrigerator! Put everything in the freezer outside, and the stuff from the non-freezer part of the refrigerator usually does well (about 40F) in an attached garage. Then just unplug the refrigerator, go to bed, and in the morning, just wipe the unit down, turn it back on, and in a few hours or so, put everything back in the refrigerator, and you will be good to go, and your neighbors will undoubtedly be impressed on how good the refrigerator now looks! 😺💨😀

:D That reminded me of a conversation I had with my friend a few years ago.... he asked me whether if you put your refrigerator outside when it is freezing, if it would heat up the food :D :D He was very disappointed when I answered no :D

My son was station here at Ft Wainright.  Well once it got cold some of the soldiers family in the Base housing for what ever reason would put  meat and other frozen good out in the snow with temps hitting the  hard minuses.  Nothing wrong with that but they would  forget to mark there cache. It  snows  covers it over  and they can't find it. Comes spring thaw and warmer days now the lost is found and  very rotten and smelly.

-5C is too warm to defrost and clean refrigerator, but -5F works! Another advantage to Fahrenheit! Just kidding re the advantage!

:D Yeah I agree.... sort of applies in the summer as well :D Despite the fact I hate high temperatures I would probably still prefer 100F over 100C :D

So, fall is about to end here in about 7 hours :D

I can already say that it has been the coldest November since I began measuring in 2012. In fact also this year´s Oct was the coldest I measured. In contrast September was the warmest Sep I had and so was June. Today we are below zero the whole day, but no snow.

-34 this morning  and  high  at noon is -24.   Sun just barely hitting the top of the trees here. Some clouds but not enough to impact the temp.
Did receive some snow  before temps slide  south towards the -30 mark

stay warm  throw another log on the fire.

I actually was curious about this and so I took the daily normals for my city and found the warmest and coldest 90 consecutive days to see how much it deviates from the astronomical/meteorological summer/winter.

And I found that the meteorological seasons are actually pretty accurate. If the seasons here were based purely on the real temp values we would have:
Summer: Jun 4 - Sep 4
Winter: Dec 2 - Mar 2

I knew November was warm it ended 4th warmest on record which goes back to late 1800's.

From NWS North Platte:

For Valentine, the average daily mean temperature for the month of
November was 42.1 degrees which was 7.7 degrees above the normal of
34.4 degrees. November 2016 will go down as the fourth warmest
November on record, tied with the year 1913
. The average daily high
temperature for November was 57.0 degrees which was 9.3 degrees
above the normal of 47.7 degrees. The average daily low temperature
for the month was 27.3 degrees which was 6.1 degrees above the
normal of 21.2 degrees. One daily record high temperature was set
during the month of November for Valentine. On the 9th, the high in
Valentine was 76 degrees. This mark broke the record of 75 degrees
set previously in 2001
