Title: Cumulus Forum taken down today
Post by: forestedge on October 09, 2018, 06:21:22 AM
Bad news for all Cumulus users. Following allegations of spam email originating from the servers hosting the Cumulus forum and wiki, the host gave Steve 4 days notice of take down!
This despite Steve checking the servers and supportive emails to the host by users. It would appear the address was being spoofed.

www.sandaysoft.com was no longer available from around 0900 GMT. today.

From his postings Steve was on holiday on a canal, so when or what he will do next I don't know.
It was not just the forum, some members weather websites were also hosted on the same servers.

Hopefully he will post an update on this forum or elsewhere.

The Cumulus forum is back online as is my own weather site but no messages can currently be viewed. Maybe there needs to be some repairs.

I did hear back from the German hosting company but they won't answer specific questions like is the site down permanently or temporarily. They just refer me to Steve but he's not easily accessible as he's on a boating holiday.

I have written to him so I'm sure he'll reply as soon as he can. Bu the fact the site is back up is encouraging.

I've just heard back from Steve and he posted the following...

Yes, they blocked it, but have restored it temporarily.

It appears they were right all along, and the server was infected, as were other Hetzner users. Once they told me what the malware was likely to be, I was able to find it and hopefully I can remove it.

That's very encouraging news and hopefully Steve can remove the offending malware. I suppose the servers may be taken down on occasions until the malware is removed but it seems to me at least the problem has been identified and will be fixed.

It's back up, but outgoing email is deliberately disabled .. so no notifications about postings and likely it will effect new user registrations on the Sandaysoft forum.  I've sent a PM to Steve offering my assistance in finding the lurking malware on the server.

Hopefully all will be good ...
Even if a collection of hardcore users have kept distribution copies of the basics, there is still the massive amount of tweaks, tips, bolt-ons, wiki etc. etc. which could be lost.

Too many forums / softwares seem to be disappearing - or is it just my age ?
