HAH fun text strings in this new release:  "The external 32768HZ crystal is abnormal!!!"

And this one:
"AmbientWeather.net:
Enter your email address and we'll walk you through creating an
account for this device on ambientweather.net.
"

Further confirming the console firmware is identical between the two systems -- just WIFI is different.

I agree on the WiFi firmware which posts to ambientweather.net instead of Ecowitt.net and in Ambient format,
but where do you locate the check against Ambient sensors rejecting or refusing to read Ecowitt sensors ?
The sensors send some "Ambient-bit", but the console needs to verify.
I would expect this to be hidden somewhere in the firmware - or maybe somewhere in the console ROM .... :roll: - or both

the leap from 1.8.1 to 1.8.5 without any .2, .3 and .4 in between appears remarkable - and without a changelog even suspicious. :?:

I've request a changelog from them.

I agree with your agreement.  The Console firmware could possibly just check what WIFI firmware is running and based upon that behave differently.  Is the radio reception of devices part of the wifi or the console components?  I'm going to say the console components because of how older units were made but I'm not sure.

I would have thought these issues would have secretly been discovered and solved already and we just don't talk about it in these forums.

Here’s the changelog for 1.8.5

Update log:

1. With WiFi modem firmware version after Pro5.0.8, the WU account setting for ambientweather has disabled. New account setup has be implemented. This dosesn't affect ecowitt customer.

2. Fix some spelling mistake for Portuguese Language for pressure, dewpoint, wind direction etc.

3. Data validation check for WS90 sensor added. This is to prevent console picking up data wrong.

4. Dual RTC clock introduced. If 32k external XTAL is not working, then  internal RC 32k timer clock will be switched over.  This is to enhance system stability.

5. NIST time update plane changed from once per day to once per two hours.

6. Timing check for data set in added in preventing from generating two data set in its data record.

7. Update a flash data entity for PiezoRain

8. Rain reset for week, month, year follow daily rain reset time at user's choice.

9. If a RTC crystal failed, a message of "The external 32768 crystal is abnormal!!!" message will be dispalyed.

But how would the console know, even checking its installed WiFi firmware, the a received sensor is an Ecowitt sensor and not an Ambient sensor.
Somewhere in the sensor transmission must be an indicator of the sensor model and brand e.g. = WH31 AMB and not WH31 EW. FO obviously delivers these modified sensors to Ambient.
This could then be checked against some other piece of information, be it the WiFi firmware, be it some other piece of information e.g. device name (which is displayed on the setup "About" screen).
I think the device firmware is the same for all FO/EW clone consoles including Ambient and the check is contained in the firmware checking sensor hardware info against console hardware info.
The WiFi firmware has to be different due to the proprietary Ambient protocol. Not sure, but not to be excluded, that the WiFi firmware is involved.

To what extent this is a secret I don't know. But I'm not aware of someone either who was able to replace the AMB WiFi firmware on an Ambient FO console by the EW WiFi firmware. All posts in this forum regarding this topic end with not possible. That nurtures my suspicion that the distinction is hard-wired - in sensors and console.

I thought the pre-amble or post-amble was already figured out by the RTL443 folks.  I might be wrong about that, but I always assumed the sensor's were coded differently and one could certainly compare that looking at the raw radio packets.

Without looking at the code, understanding how it is really done is all speculation -- maybe the Ambient WI-FI is looking for a specific bit setting in the transmission, and Ecowitt's is not.  It does seem that ONLY Ambient has different WiFi, Froggit, Ecowitt and a few others all seem to use the same WiFi (correct?)

As for converting a console from one type to another, I  had planned on doing just that with a WS-2000 Console with a bad SD slot.  I have most of the hardware tools to read the chips and reprogram them, I just need to finish obtaining some of the software tools from the tool manufacturers.

Another possible way might be to fake the unit into updating itself with the other's WiFi -- but I'm not sure why there are A and B versions of every WiFi release:

URL1 = http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=AMBWeather_user1&v=user1_amb_433.bin
URL2 = http://download.ecowitt.net/down/filewave?n=AMBWeather_user2&v=user2_amb_433.bin

Those files are different, and I'm pretty sure both are not installed at the same time during an upgrade.  I've watched updates of the GW1000 and only one seems to be installed but it alternates... so perhaps two different areas of the EEPROM depending on what was last flashed.  Speculation again.

It would certainly be possible to proxy the wsview app or awnet app through an HTTP proxy (which is what I did to see what calls were being made) and when asked to download AMBWeather instead pull the EasyWeather version.   I have not gone that far yet as I wanted to read what was actually stored on the boards first.

We should probably take this to another / new thread if we are going to discuss ways to convert one unit to another.

anybody know what points

3. Data validation check for WS90 sensor added. This is to prevent console picking up data wrong.

7. Update a flash data entity for PiezoRain

If someone can elaborate? For example, what wrong data can the WS90 pickup? and not sure what point 7 means at all.

all FO rebrander clone consoles except Ambient have the same WiFi firmware: EasyWeather 1.x.x or 5.x.x [HP2560]
Ambient has AMBWeather

not sure what you mean by A and B types (at FO/EW this usually refers to the console reception frequency (A=686 MHz, B = 915 MHz) - if so here too, the firmware should be independent of the reception frequency of the console).

I believe part of the reason the "convert AmbientWeather" To "Ecowitt" , etc, conversations were mostly dead ended was for fear of violating EULAs, some people with NDAs , and also possible involving this site , and its host , in passing information that may have been considered secret and maybe incur legal issues.  So, in basics, if you can do it, be careful on discussing it.

Now I know some may not care, but quite a few do.
Also there were discussions, that the code , on the console, was in the bootloader, which does not change on firmware

not sure what you mean by A and B types (at FO/EW this usually refers to the console reception frequency (A=686 MHz, B = 915 MHz) - if so here too, the firmware should be independent of the reception frequency of the console).

I thought they would be for balancing too, but they are different binaries.  98% identical I would guess.

example comparison:
    4   1 ^A     2 ^B
  1315  44 $     54 ,
  2451  44 $     54 ,
  2543  44 $     54 ,
  3011  40       50 (
  3047  40       50 (
  3083  40       50 (
  3119  40       50 (
  3375  40       50 (
  3715  44 $     54 ,
  3719  44 $     54 ,
  3723  44 $     54 ,
  3731  44 $     54 ,
  3743  44 $     54 ,
  3747  44 $     54 ,
  3751  44 $     54 ,
  3755  44 $     54 ,
  3759  44 $     54 ,
  5647  44 $     54 ,
  6231  40       50 (
  6235  40       50 (
  7923  40       50 (

I have no idea why they are different like that. $->,  spaces -> ( in certain areas.

By A and B I just mean two different version, not the frequency -- so I should be more careful when framing my words to not confuse people.

The Gw1100 uses ota.ecowitt.net for downloads instead of download.ecowitt.net --   I wonder where the HP2560 get's its WiFi from if its using 5.x.

That was another thing that confused me is that sometimes I see EasyWeather and other times I see EasyWeatherPro -- in fact some firmware versions show PRO on the console.

As for the difference of EasyWeather and EasyWeatherPro, see our main MUST READ thread firmware section.
The HP2561 console and probably some late models of the HP2551 too have a different WiFi modem which needs a different WiFi firmware = EasyWeatherPro 5.0.x
In future the EasyWeatherPro firmware is planned to be used for both WiFi modem types and the EasyWeather will meet its end of life.
Pro_1.8.5 e.g. is the name of the device (not WiFi) firmware in the setup --> "About" screen. Can be confusing.

just to add from the HP25x0 device firmware changelog for FW 1.8.1
V1.8.1 Firmware Update

1. OTA feature supported for WiFi modem. The feature can be edited on "about" page. OTA will be triggered when entering this page, and this feature needs WiFi modem firmware verison to be v5.0.7 or later. Prior to this version, this feature is not supported.
i.e. in future the device firmware update will be possible OTA, certain conditions fulfilled
OTA for the WiFi firmware does already exist since long.

I'm having all sorts of problems with the 1.8.5 firmware on my 2553 in the custom server section.  Sometimes changes I make are not saved and I cannot get the 2553 to talk to my CumulusMX.  For now I have disabled FOSHKplugin and am sending only to my CumulusMX.  I don't know what happened but before I upgraded the firmware everything was working fine.

Anyone else having these problems.

The only thing I noticed was that some of the sensor arrays I do not own suddenly had IDs.  I’m thinking there was some leftover garbage from the build.  I would suggest a full reset but that is painful.

Do I get this right ?
When your HP2550 console posts directly to CMX, it works - and via FOSHKplugin you've got issues after the firmware update ?
Then something in your FOSHKplugin setup or configuration may be wrong ... (or FOSHKplugin may have a so far undiscovered bug)

Can you check, if your foshkplugin.conf file is still complete ? (it gets truncated sometimes)
At each restart FOSHKplugin creates a backup of foshkplugin.conf by the name foshkplugin.conf.backup.
Stop the service, copy the backup file back to overwrite the exisiting truncated foshkplugin.conf and restart.
If it doesn't help, post your issue in @olicat's sticky FOSHKplugin thread https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=39625.0 or open a new thread/topic e.g. "HP2551 FW 1.8.5 custom server issue with FOSHKplugin".  Oliver will be the right person to support you here.

OK, I restarted the plugin and neither CMX nor PWT are working.  I will do as you suggest later this aft, but one thing I noticed is that the FWD_URL in the snippet reads "station/ecowitt" whereas the path in my 2553 the path reads "data/path" as had been suggested earlier to me.  Can you please tell me which is right?

[Forward-1]
FWD_ENABLE = True
FWD_CMT = CumulusMX
FWD_URL = http://192.168.1.10:8998/station/ecowitt
FWD_INTERVAL = 5
FWD_IGNORE = rfdata
FWD_TYPE = RAWEW
FWD_SID =
FWD_PWD =
FWD_STATUS = False
FWD_MQTTCYCLE = 0
FWD_EXEC =

you have to be aware of the flow of data - maybe the data flow picture in https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=40730.0 gives you an idea:
FOSHKplugin is an information broker or "man-in-the-middle".
The credentials with which the console posts to FOSHKplugin are different from the ones with which FOSHKplugin forwards to CMX. FOSHKplugin forwards with the same credentials that the console would do directly.
Therefore it is correct that the console posts to FOSHKplugin with the path /data/report/ ("data/path" where "path" is the name of the path would be wrong - it should be "report" with a closing "/" ) while FOSHKplugin posts to CMX with the path /station/ecowitt without a closing "/".
You can check in raw-foshkplugin.log what arrives from your console if at all something arrives.
