Accurate or Not? You decide!
« on: January 30, 2014, 12:09:37 PM »
So I thought about having some fun with this forum. Somebody posts a weather folklore, and then we decide whether it's accurate or not accurate. Here we go!!

If salt is sticky,
And gains in weight;
It will rain
Before too late

Sodium Chloride (salt) is hygroscopic...attracts water from air.

Lookup the word: deliquescence

gee thought the saying was "If your shoe sticks to the floor, don't reach down and feel for why."
Salt really doesn't get sticky.

Never heard a scientific explanation for that one, maybe someone else might know a good reason?

Here's another one!

A ring around the sun or moon,
Means that rain will come real soon

Accurate, this is what I found out researching:

Red sky at night, sailors delight.
When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow.

Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning.
A red sunrise reflects the dust particles of a system that has just passed from the west. This indicates that a storm system may be moving to the east. If the morning sky is a deep fiery red, it means a high water content in the atmosphere. So, rain is on its way.

Nicely said!  8-) Never thought about it like that!

That's pretty much the same saying isn't it? I guess it just has to do with high and low pressure?

"Every heavy fog in August means a snow event during the winter"

The local formers here in KY were warning us last August after many morning fogs. We have had a much colder and more snow days this year.

I think this one is applicable for the east coast.. at least the first part thus far!

A warm November is the sign of a bad winter.

Seems like it makes sense. That would be like squirrels not wanting to climb high in trees during wind storms/high wind events due to the swaying of the weaker tree branches up at the top. Anybody else have any thoughts?

Squirrels here don't nest in trees. They go underground but are active during the winter.  As to crows flying that applies to most birds. Gulls do the same thing as weather changes. Raven when it gets hot the walk instead of flying. Cooler walking then flying creating the heat burning up engry.
