Newer FARS fan replacement?
« on: December 26, 2020, 05:40:00 PM »
Apparently, at some point, Davis changed the FARS fan to something else other than the ones you can get at Jameco. This one lasted me 3 years in the Phoenix heat.

It runs approx. 100RPM faster at 0.9V and 200RPM faster at 1.2V than the Jameco. If this makes a difference in the airflow I don't know. The peg for the fan is shorter on the Jameco motor too.

I know people are going to suggest going to a PC case fan motor, or AC fan. I can't do that as I don't have power out where the pole is. It's easy for me to replace these motors.

But, does anyone know what this motor is? Here are multiple pictures of it and disassembled:

I don't know if I copied links wrong or what but thought I was getting something fairly close from a post in forum........ but the ones I got from Jameco were not even close. My original looks like yours but what I got  needed pill bottle cut for diameter shim and shift is real short. Seems to work.

Next time I will do more hunting and check dimensions. Some listing have no dimensions though.

This is what I used til I went case fan. It worked fine, the fan housing diameter was a tiny small, but fixable. No idea if it's the same or not as above.

I used the same one that CW2274 provided a link to.  There is a link on that page to the motor datasheet.  The datasheet has the motor dimensions and other specs so you can compare it to what you have.

Im not sure if you guys are confused or not, but I already know about the Jameco motor. I'm looking for a direct replacement for these newer Davis ones. The Jameco (Nichibo) ones are not the same - although they appear from what I can gather a direct replacement for older FARS motors, the fan itself and the housing were different. My concern is keeping the fan speed AT or ABOVE the Davis I am replacing.

I did find this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/RF-300CA-DC-1-5V-6V-9800RPM-Micro-24mm-Solar-Power-Motor-10mm-Long-Shaft-DIY-Toy/262652681275?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

It will fit and requiring shimming as well, but at 1.5V it puts out 2350RPM at 20mA for a no load. Half that for 0.75V and you should still be above the Davis one at about 1050RPM. So - your getting more speed and less current draw than the 55mA the Jameco will run at no load. The Jameco is only running about 1075RPM at 1.2V while the Davis is running closer to 1200RPM. I may be overthinking this and the small fan speed reduction from the Jameco may be inconsequential, but I need someone with knowledge of those things to validate that.

Anyways I'll test it and see.

So that motor was nowhere near my calculations.
I believe the Jameco will continue to be the closest bet.

For the record, the fan housing in my old Davis VP2 (2009) can accommodate a 36 mm diameter body fan (1.5") max and it's 29 mm deep.

Found this one about 4 years back & the listing still seems current.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002791210848.html

Has a 14mm shaft like the original.

Did also buy a similar one another months earlier & installed, but it had a shorter shaft.
