Title: Check the battery status in Vantage Vue
Post by: captgadget on March 30, 2021, 05:55:10 AM
I just received an email from Davis telling me the battery in the Vantage Vue needs to be replaced. Only did that about 6 months ago. I don't have my console set up anymore since I started using the WLL but isn't there a way for me to check that battery status other than Davis sending me an email? In the browser, the only battery that shows up is the batteries for the WLL. The unit is nine years old and just wondering if I should replace the solar panel.

The Health tab on your weatherlink.com station account should show whatever health information is available for your station.

From memory, the Vue/VP2 transmitters don't report a battery voltage but only a good/bad flag - obviously better than nothing. So this will just give you confirmation of why the email from Davis was triggered.

I'm afraid that if the battery life seems to be getting progressively shorter, the problem is likely to be the supercap and not the solar panel. For most users, the simplest option is then a new Vue ISS unit once the battery life becomes too short to tolerate. Yes, you can buy a new wiring harness but there are complications to that (eg has your Vue got the solar panel hardwired or not and there's not a lot of cost-saving vs a complete new ISS).

Battery life of a Vantage Vue appear to have a mind of their own and they certainly are not consistent. Some will consistently last for over 12 months yet others can start flagging low battery between 3 to 6 months. Checking the battery voltage confirms the battery itself is low but if this is a result of a capacitor or not is a little unknown as one can go for years with the same replacement schedule.

Is the cap in the Vues not changeable?

Is the cap in the Vues not changeable?

One or two people have worked out a rather ugly hack to do it, but most users aren't going to try this. So for most users in practice the answer is no it's not changeable. (The Vue PCBA is potted so you can see the problem.)
