Purchase Advice - ECOWITT HP2553 + ECOWITT GW2000
« on: April 12, 2024, 02:23:53 PM »
I'm looking at purchasing a ECOWITT HP2553 and ECOWITT GW2000.  I want the weather station and display but I also want to be able to view the weather station data on my phone and be able to access it on my LAN to feed the data into my local influxdb server for integration into the various smart home devices I've built over the years.  Will this combo do the trick?  I'm in Nova Scotia and we have a wet/snowy winter.  If I don't get the heater cable for the HP2553 will I often be without wind readings?  I'm not liking the idea of a cable coming from the weather station.

https://shop.ecowitt.com/products/hp2553 and a GW2000 , may be overkill. The HP2553 as listed also supports uploading to weather sites for remote viewing. I know the GW2000 is not that much more $, but you may not need it.

I can't comment on the wind sensor which is a WS80.

Edit: If it were  me, I would start with the hp2553, although there are a bunch of negative reviews on the WS80 wind sensor in this forum, probably still OK, depending on what you want to use it for, I mean there could be accuracy issues.

interesting.  I like the idea of no moving parts but if it's inaccurate that kinda defeats the purpose

Please don't misinterpret what I said, I don't have a WS80, I'm just familiar with some threads in here. I would , if I were you, look them up in a search (search for ws80). The unit may be fine, I just don't have experience, and people tend to post bad experiences far more frequently than good ones :) , on anything, even a donut.

Edit: Also wind is the probably the hardest to measure for the average consumer, so much depends on placement that most can't get a precise, comparable result to other locations, this goes for any form of wind sensor.

I have the WS80 (HP2553) now for serval months. Thus far it has been a good unit. I was skeptical at first and now, it's my main squeeze per say.
I also have the HP2552 and still using it. This was my favorite for years and it's still going strong.
https://shop.ecowitt.com/products/hp2552

I have nothing to compare on either unit as far as wind. But I will say, the WS80 refresh rate is awesome.
If you go with the ws80 and live in cold climate, get the heater.

Let us know what you decided to go with.

I think the original question of the OP was whether the combination HP2553 console + WS80 outdoor array + WH40 rain gauge (=HP2553 station) and a GW2000 is good to see the (real time ?) data via app and access data to process them externally.

Yes, a HP2553 station plus a GW2000 gateway/console or a GW1200 gateway/console would fulfill your needs - especially if you want to see real-time data via WS View Plus and not only the one-minute updates of the ecowitt.net dashboard or the Ecowitt app.

also read the text of the respective sensors: WS80, WH40, accessories (e.g. heater/external power supply - Nova Scotia might have rough winters)

Will read now.

I suppose I could only run the heater during the winter and store it for the warmer months.

does the GW2000 have everything the GW1200 has?  Amazon.ca doesn't seem to carry the GW1200 and that's where I'm buying all this stuff.

Got the HP1553 and the GW2000.  Data reporting via the GW2000 to the regular weather sites and then to a custom python script that pulls the data into my local database 😎
