Data Center Destroyed... takes out LMO
« on: March 10, 2021, 02:58:35 PM »
A fire early today (March 10) has destroyed one of OVHcloud’s Strasbourg data centres and part of a second one, the French cloud provider’s CEO, Octave Klaba, wrote in a tweet. He confirmed that all the people working at the site were safe.
OVHcloud is the biggest European-based cloud services provider, competing against U.S. giants Amazon Web Services, Microsoft’s Azure and Google Cloud, which dominate the market.

Major issues with our adjunct, lightningmaps.org.
Info is LMO will be offline for several days.

BT servers seem ok at this Posting time.

As I mentioned a day or so ago on the BT forum,  they apparently did not have a working Halon gas fire extinguishing system, as many do. Unless Halon is banned there, IMHO that shows their incompetence. No wonder that Tobi was going to move from there.

That fire was all over many different news media outlets. It affected over a million websites !

OVH has a poor reputation in network security circles for not spending money on controlling hackers/spammers on their services.  Although I wouldn't put it past the EU to ban Halon and equivalents, I have zero doubt that OVH would NOT have spent the money for fire suppression even if it was an option.....

Don't know about France but ...
Quote
Halon fire extinguishers are now illegal in the UK, due to the damaging effect the fire extinguishing agent has on the Earth’s ozone layer. There are only three main exceptions to this rule; Halon fire extinguishers can be used in aircraft, for military use, and in the Channel Tunnel.
... and in the OVH news pages there is is hidden away reference to water tanks.
Imagine what you will KNOW tomorrow !

Those that rely on the Cloud for anything only have themselves to blame during time of outages, from any third party providers and especially sub-standard providers

I agree, not knowing all the facts, it would seem incompetent not to have a gas fire suppressant system.
Most data centers have converted from Halon to an FM-200 gas suppressant system.

Does anyone have an update on LMO?  It seemed to be back for a week, and then the back-end apparently went offline again with an "Internal Server Error :: Code 500" message.....

The 'backend' and databases require a massive rebuild. Tobi had full backups of the processing, and most data... however the massive frequent changes on the Blitzortung Server over the last year or so had not been totally integrated... and the 'patchwork' temporary comms were lost.  Though I don't know for sure, I expect Tobi will try to fully re-intergrate with BT and this won't be quick.

LMO server IBOD1 appears to be functioning ...  IBOD2 is inactive, at least at the primary URL.
Remember, due to career and life changes, Tobi has much less time to devote to BT. Please consider Lightningmaps.org as an "Adjunct" to the Blitzortung network, and not a "Primary" source for data... things are NOT like they used to be, with frequent BT server changes and network growth, any 'adjuncts' including special app scripts etc, are subject to 'failures' ... and the data-center fire hit Tobi hard...
....Also note, as far as LMO is concerned... remember a couple of years ago, when Egon and Tobi were moving the main BT servers to new hardware, one of the new servers suffered a massive failure, and caused real issues until they could get it replaced.  Much of the main BT base became corrupted, and it took months to restore,... ...and this coincided with Tobi's new challenges, so the 'patchwork' interfaces have pretty much remained in place between the two networks.
