E-Field Problem
« on: June 08, 2014, 12:45:33 PM »
No signals being generated unless I loosen the coax cable at the amp or pre-amp. Does not matter which connection is loosened it will then produce very good signals for a few seconds.

I have touched up my joints after inspecting them. Inspection did not reveal anything and touching them up did not correct it.

Any suggestions?

Joe - is the preamp led normally lit dimly?  does that change when you loosen or tighten the connections, even momentarily?

Yes, it is slightly dim all the time. Yes, it changes ever so slightly when I loosen it.

Greg

Greg,

I do have this issue.... Do not have a new one. So, I solder a wire to the board and connected it to the antenna using the screw. No change.

If I connect and disconnect, I get a signal. In fact every time I do this it produces a signal.

OK -- if this happens every time you loosen the cable, then at a guess, you're not actually seeing an E-field signal, but are rather viewing the effect of loosening the cable (either one should produce a signal that would be amplified by the amplifier board).

That leads me to guess that the amp board is probably OK, as it's amplifying what it is receiving, and since DC is getting through to the preamp board, the cable is probably OK, too.  Whatever problem you're having is likely on the pre-amp board itself.  But at this point, I'd probably attack the preamp with a mulitimeter and double-check parts placement/soldering, and if there's nothing found check the amplifier board.

Just as another suggestion, look at my "sordid tale": http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=22836.0

Some of these solder shorts can be devilishly hard to find.

Do you have an o'scope? You could try watching the noise on the output test points while you run the gain pot up and down. If the noise floor doesn't scale with the gain, that will tell you something.

If you don't have a scope, maybe a sensitive mV AC volt scale on a DMM might work as well.

Okay... I'll go back to check for poor connections and possible shorts.

Thanks,
