Connecting wireless VP2 via COMM RJ-11
« on: April 09, 2025, 07:18:51 AM »
Hello, I am working on a Davis VP2 6162eu wireless station. I'm trying to connect to it without a monitor via the rj-11 comm port.
By measuring the voltage on the port, I was able to figure out the behavior of the pins:

1 pin - 3 v,
2 pin - 3.3v,
3 and 4 pins - close to 0v,
5 pin - assumed to be ground,
6 pin - signal that gives 3.3 v every 2 seconds

Is it possible to connect directly to it via the rj-11 comm port?

I found articles on the pinout of this port on the forum (https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=25351.0 , https://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=24056.0 ), but none gave any results. Many recommend connecting to pins 3 and 4, but in my case it doesn't work. The station does not receive or issue commands

AFAIK a wireless ISS SIM board on a VP2 will not have a usable output port. You would need the cabled version for that and talk to it via RS485.

This then is a Davis 6162 cabled system? Connect it without a monitor to what?

Both those links get very confused with mainly RS232 6p4c stuff (data logger to PC) as opposed ISS-Console 6p6c before any data logger to PC.

To a PC via an RS422 -> TTL converter to receive data packets from the station

In the course of researching this issue, I came to the same conclusion, so I created a topic to finally deal with this issue.

OK, but what is the issue? AFAIK it just can't be done via a cabled connection. End of story. If you have a wireless SIM board then people usually just use an inexpensive SDR receiver and get the raw data packets that way. And TBH  a thread documenting the cabled protocol in more detail might be good to see - AFAIK that has not been done in any properly detailed way.

But if it were possible then the simplest assumption is that it's RS485 as per the cabled SIM board and any posts describing a cabled connection are going to be the best starting point.
