WM-918, Serial to USB and FreeWX on Windows10
« on: May 05, 2020, 01:55:30 AM »
G'day everyone!
So, my old Oregon Scientific WM-918 is still going strong but the same can't be said for the laptop that was running FreeWX 2.04 on WindowsXP which died the other day.
In fact, this is the 4th weather computer the WM-918 has outlasted!
Now I've tried loading FreeWX 2.04 on my desk computer running Windows10 and hooking up the WM-918 via a Serial to USB cable. But I get a Comms Error stating that no data is being received or data is faulty.
Has anyone been able to get FreeWX to run on Windows10 like this or will I have to look for a laptop with a serial port (getting hard to find)? :-k

I always said to my wife that I'll only buy a new weather station when this one gives up the ghost ... well, I'm still waiting

try googling maybe for a newer driver
or see if you can get a more recent usb to serial adapator which will have a driver compatible with W10

In your quest for a new Serial to USB adapter you will find two types. Ones that use the Prolific or the FTDI chipset. I highly recommend using the FTDI chipset over the Prolific.
These aren't adapter brands, they are components of the adapter itself. You just have to look at the specifications to see if they are using the FTDI or the Prolific chipset.

I have it running on a Win10 with a USB to Serial.  Prolific USB to Serial adapter.   I want to move the setup to a new PC but I can't find the installation files.  Does anyone have them (the FreeWX-WI files)?
