Coronal mass edjection on June 1st.
« on: June 01, 2025, 03:10:11 AM »
NOAA reports that a coronal mass ejection erupting from the Sun is expected to hit Earth on Sunday.  It's magnetic waves could affect critical infrastructure ranging from satellites to power grids. NASA model predictions show a very fast solar storm traveling near 1000 km/s that could hit Earth by midday Sunday, June 1. A slower storm ahead might cause a slight traffic delay, but G4-levels by June 2 are possible. This means the aurora may be visible deep into mid-latitudes.This is a G2 on a scale of G1 to G5.

EDIT: Back to 7 (G3) at 09:00 UTC. Should stay there or thereabouts until 09:00 UTC tomorrow.

SWPC reports G4 conditions observed. Forecast here is "mostly clear" so it's on. The last time we had a G4 (October) it was visible from our house. Ironically we had just returned from a trip to Iceland so I was a pro at the aurora thing by then

The K index had dipped down to 5 but is now back up to 7.  The HF bands are terrible.
