seeking handheld anemometer - rechargeable, omnidirectional
« on: November 28, 2023, 12:11:19 PM »
It seems to be very difficult to find one of these... I can find rechargeable devices *or* omnidirectional devices, but not one that does both...
Does anyone have any recommendations for this requirement??

Background:
I carry my anemometer in my backpack; it never leaves the pack.  So when I'm in the field and pull it out to use it, I *really* need it to be ready to go!!  I pulled my current one out yesterday, and the battery was dead... again... not only does it require replacing batteries, but it requires a tiny screwdriver in order to open the battery compartment... absolutely useless in the field...

I want an anemometer that can be powered via a USB connector; I carry a 20,000mAh battery with me, and carry USB-C and USB-micro cables.  All of my portable digital devices can be powered via USB in an emergency - except for the anemometer...

and of course, I much prefer omnidirectional anemometer, because pointing directly into the wind isn't always intuitive when hiking, since winds often whip around constantly...

Any help or suggestions would be welcome!

A quick Google search found a couple of options.  You could go with a handheld mechanical anemometer like https://www.darrera.com/wp/en/product/im159-handheld-mechanical-anemometer/.  Or, if you want more advanced tech, you could go with the Skywatch BL300 or BL500 which support USB charging (see https://www.darrera.com/wp/en/product/12830-skywatch-bl-300/ and https://www.darrera.com/wp/en/product/12850-skywatch-bl-500/).

Well, okay... shipping will likely be expensive, since these are all overseas, but they generally match my requirements...

I had looked at other Skywatch devices, but don't see much in the way of user reviews of them, which leaves me leery given the high cost... but if that's all there is, I guess I'll have to live with it... there don't seem to be alot of the omnidirectional devices around...
