Title: is purpleair down ?
Post by: vinceskahan on July 21, 2019, 12:34:42 AM
Getting a "This application is temporarily over its serving quota. Please try again later." trying to access their website and my PA is not responding to requests for data via wget of the /json url locally either.   Weewx hasn't been able to get anything for almost 6 hours now from the station either.

yes its down , no need tear into weewx ..however raises the question of devices having cloud dependancies , frustrating spending hours fixing something that isnt broken locally..

Yes.

That said, I did find a workaround that seems to avoid the cloud dependency.

In poking around I noticed that a wget of http://purpleair/json (the hostname of my unit is 'purpleair' in the local hosts file) is now redirecting to http://purpleair-NNNN/json (where NNNN is the serial number of my PA unit).  A wget of http://purpleair-NNNN/json worked as expected.  Cool.

So I added an alias to my local hosts file and edited weewx.conf to 'also' use purpleair-NNNN as the hostname (just in case) and restarted weewx and it works again 'without' the cloud dependency.

I can't speculate on whether the surprising redirect is something in their code that is some failsafe if their cloud goes away or not.  Also can't guess whether using purpleair-NNNN for the hostname will continue to work in my wget (and weewx doing basically the same thing).

But it's a workaround that works for me.  Give it a try.

Looks like Purple Air is back online this morning.  I'm curious if your work around is still working.

Yes, it is still working for both a 'curl' and from the weewx purpleair extension.
