Title: Oddcast stops streaming when it wants to.....
Post by: capeweather on August 05, 2007, 09:53:00 AM
Have any of you experienced Oddcast where it stops streaming the NOAA radio and needs to be shut down and restarted? My radio is always on and never shuts off so I know it's not that. I find myself having to restart the application every other day. Thanks guys for any help on this.  :)

I run my NOAA radio oddcast for weeks at a time without any problems. My ISP sometimes goes down for short spells but I have the oddcast on autoconnect and it always starts itself back up without any assistance from me.

Lonnie:

What version of oddcast are you using.  Sometimes my version won't re-autoconnect.

Chris

Oddcastv3
Build 22050
3/14/2007

This has been the best version for me so far. I had trouble connecting with an older version also.

Thanks guys. I'll give the version a shot that you mentioned Lonnie. I hope it helps eliminate the constant drop out I've been getting. I'll keep you guys posted.

Curious,
How much bandwidth does this chew up?

It depends on how you set the program up. You can set the bitrate all the way down to 8 kbps which if very minimal bandwidth usage and still have a high quality stream.

Perhaps quality is in the eye of the beholder.  Most of us stream at 16K per second, low enough for dial-up users to listen pretty easily.  My stream sounds like crap if I go much below that.

If you let Weather Underground do the streaming, you don't need to worry about bandwidth.  This would only be a concern if you host your own server or have a DSL/satellite broadband connection.

The new version bombed so I'm thinking this may be PC related since I'm using an old SB 16 card in it. So I went ahead and installed Oddcast on my other WX PC which is much faster and has 2G of memory hoping that might be a solution. So far it's running ok.
