Title: camera as weather cam
Post by: realdreams on January 23, 2013, 04:06:49 PM
I saw a couple video on youtube about it. It seems people just connect the video output on the camera to a video capture device on the computer.
From what I can remember those capture devices(like a usb tv tuner) without hardware encoding capability are very harsh on CPU. Is there a cheap one with hardware encoding?

And how do you keep the camera charged? Every camera I have used can't charge the battery itself.

You do not need a tv tuner.   You just need software like this  http://www.ilovefreesoftware.com/05/windows/5-best-free-webcam-surveillance-software.html

I have two cameras. One is powered by the USB cable the other by cat5 network cable.

I was talking about using a digital camera as a weather cam since cameras generally have a lot better image quality than a webcam.

Did you make the network camera? I would like to make a PoE cam(USB over cat5 or PoE IP cam) someday..

After reading your other two post I don't think I can help you.       I don't understand why you did not ask all the questions in one post it would have made it a lot easier to understand what you want to do.

Now. I suggest that you look at a cam corder rather than digital camera. My first weather cam was an old Panasonic VHS cam corder. It was made to stream video and had the best picture I have ever been able to capture. Unfortunately it was BIG and not suitable for outside use.

I currently have a JVC cam corder  very small and it streams video at very high resolution very easily.   I just don't want to use it for a WX cam.

You just might have an old cam corder laying around.

Lastely   I don't think there are many on here who have the bandwith to stream the HD video that you want to stream. I sure do not.

I thought these would be too much for a topic... I am not trying to get all of the done at the same time.. #-o #-o

Thanks for the info. I don't have a camcorder.. thinking about getting a digital camera on clearance

I know this is old... but go to IPTimeslapse.com for software to hookup a regular digital camera to.

I am using 3 Olympus SP500 cams and a Canon T3 for night photography on my site.  All with Sebectec or IPTimelapse software.  Rock solid software and Mike is very helpful.  You can see mine at www.SkunkBayWeather.com (http://www.SkunkBayWeather.com).  I am currently looking at the YouTube streaming package with IPTimelapse as well....  I guess I have too much time on my hands now that I have retired....

I 'think" I found the issue. I had https in front of the link and it's not a secure link. If you could try one more time and let me know I would appreciate it. I'm 99% certain there is nothing bad there. :-)
