Need help testing new CSS-based horizontal drop-down menu
« on: August 10, 2007, 12:37:36 PM »
I'm in the process of developing a new CSS-based (no JavaScript) horizontal drop-down/fly-out menu system based on Stu Nicholls' work at http://www.cssplay.co.uk/menus/final_drop5.html

A new PHP dynamically generates the menu based on an XML control file.

I've tested the menus for proper presentation/operation with IE7, FF2.0, Opera 9.1, Safari for Windows, and Netscape 7.1 (which doesn't behave properly).

I'd like to see if it works ok with older versions of Internet Explorer like
IE 5.5, IE 6 and earlier versions of Firefox (1.0, 1.5).

If you'd like to help test, please visit http://saratoga-weather.org/index-dropdown.php (the only page outfitted with the menu) and let me know your results and browser type/version tested.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Best regards,
Ken

BTW.. when finished, it will be released on my scripts page :-)

Ken-
I tested these old browsers:
Mozilla 1.3- The submenus pop up but over on the far left of the page which means they aren't accessible since they disappear before you can get the mouse to them.

Opera 7- Same behavior as Mozilla 1.3

Firefox 1.5- Menu works O.K, but expands to 2 lines if the text size is set to normal. Works fine if text size is decreased.

MSN TV (WebTV)- Menu appears but it is expanded showing all submenus at once.

Thanks folks for the testing!

Some have had mixed results with IE6 (works for some, really hosed-over screen for others).

The Navigator 7.1, Mozilla 1.3, Opera 7 show popup menus at left of screen, instead of dropdown under main menu and flyout on second menu.

With Browsershots.org (Thanks Curly for that link), the screen shots for IE5.01, 5.5 and 6.0 all show screen format deformities).

So... work is cut out for me.  Now to set up a VM testing environment for the older browsers...

Best regards,
Ken

I think I've fixed the really broken IE6 (and hopefully IE 5 and 5.5 issues).  The problem was an unclosed internal table generated for IE6 and below only.

For the folks who tested with IE6 and had it fail, please try the
http://saratoga-weather.org/index-dropdown.php again and see if it works normally for you now.

If anyone has Win98 or WinME around and is using IE 5.01 or IE 5.5-SP2,  please take a look at the page and see if it formats and works correctly for you.

There's still a problem with Navigator 7.1 (Mozilla 1.3, Opera 7) where the dropdown menus are presented at the left side of the screen instead of below the top menu item.. working on that now.

Ken

Thanks for all the testing!

I now have Version 1.00 available for download so you can try it too ;-)

http://saratoga-weather.org/scripts-CSSmenu.php#dropdown

I'm now fitting this system into my site (the documentation page above is already done.. now to
change the rest of my site to use it).

I've done a small rev to  the CSS generated to fix an issue with the menu appearing behind the buoy-data.php image map.

Version 1.01 is now available http://saratoga-weather.org/scripts-CSSmenu.php#dropdown

Seems to work well with IE7, IE6-SP2, FF 2.0.0.6, Opera 9.2, Safari (Windows).
Still has a 'menus pop up at left side' problem with Netscape 7 .. fortunately, less than 1% of my visitors use Netscape 7  :-)
