I live in NM and captured that line as it blew through Shreveport. Now western Tennessee is getting the brunt of the system..I'll have to post those this evening seeing as those storms are just now firing up.

Anyways..here's western Tenn. at KNQA-Memphis

The right image are the VIL data in the storms.

Just open more than one session of GR.  Each session can have it's own radar ID.

Just open more than one session of GR.  Each session can have it's own radar ID.

If thats available in the paid for version. I have the trial version right now.

I have Windows 7, so you can't really open up a new window of most programs without resorting to the start menu and digging for the program.
I figured it out. :D

No, just use an image editor like IrfanView to resize/compress the image to something reasonable.  Nothing posted on a board like this should be over 100K.  Some of the ones here are 400K or more.

I thought there was a way to save images as .jpgs instead of .pngs which would make them considerably smaller in Kb, but I can't remember how right now.

**UPDATED** 9:48pm MDT/10:48 CDT

Large hail about to hit Greensburg, Kansas in this shot. At least this latest squall isn't expected to be very tornadic.

I didn't get the screenshots for earlier Easter day for northern MO and eastern MO/western IL...

But I am watching early morning weather develop over nern OK and possibly swern MO.

Here's Oklahoma:

Near Wakita, OK

reports from Cee Vee were "large" tornado.  Of course spotters sometimes tend to over do it, but I wouldn't be surprised at all from that image.

The NWS in Norman is probably talking to spotters and meteorologists in Lubbock.

Give it time, they'll probably issue one soon.

Tornado Warning going going gone!

It's still SVR warned, and has been for the last 30 minutes by the NWS in Norman. This storm still has a "pseudo" hook to it, but no real vortex sig associated with it. I'm watching other cells:

Greensburg, KS

Dickens, TX

Childress, TX- OK border

I still say that OK borderline storm has a hook developing again, especially southeast of Childress, TX.

The best conditions for tornadoes are still in OK so it could do it again.

I've got to fix my storm icons. I have the humorous icons from GRLevelXStuff.com, but I never see the ETVS icon (and the Yazoo tornado I assume was ETVS, or just TVS? In any case I think ETVS is rare)

I like these icons though. But I only see the hail icons and the TVS icon from the entire set, and nothing else.

Looks like I'll be digging into NWS LII data tonight after it calms a little to analyze these storms today. I just need to purchase GRLevel2 and maybe consider getting GRLevel2 A.

I cannot believe that this is the same storm that hit Norman and Moore.

It looks like these storms are taking off the front and going off on themselves. In the last hour these storms have split up into sections, and eventually started to rotate.

More resides in northwest Oklahoma.

First you'll need to save your images (which you have I will assume).
Then, you'll need either a Photobucket, Flickr or Imageshack account
From there you can use the IMG code [IMG] to post on this forum

Gust Front or OFB?

They're the one and the same (aren't they?).

I would say a gust front is usually an outflow boundary, but an outflow boundary may not be a gust front.
It's not unusual for storms as far away as Chicago to create an outflow boundary which sets up here in the Ohio Valley and then triggers storms the next day.
At least that's my understanding from the example they gave at our Advanced Spotter Training a few months ago.

Very nice.

I had been on vacation (and went through the Midwest) and didn't get a single spot of severe weather...until I got to Portales, New Mexico on my way back to Albuquerque. WTF?  ](*,) #-o

I went from El Paso, TX to Pratt, KS and got nothing but hot air and humidity. Well..it was fun drive on the KS Turnpike. :D

Got to Kansas City and stayed for 4 days and after I left for Thayer, MO, it poured cats and dogs in KC. (Anybody ever been there and ate at Hayward's BBQ?)

When I left Thayer (one day stay) it rained in Thayer and when I got to Springdale, AR, it threatened to rain there. (But it didn't. The next morning was HOT). Went through Norman, OK (very nice morning when I toured OU, very hot afternoon when I left). That same night I got to Portales and it POURED (but only for like, five minutes- impressive lightning show driving in though from Amarillo). I'll add that just two days ago I was in Portales and now the town is getting severe weather. It's like I'm severe weather repellant (hey anybody want me in the Midwest?)  ;)

I drew an arrow on the saved picture for my Rio Rancho, NM weather facebook page.
The storms were moving east earlier, and then I noticed a NE and then N trend. Those storms
east of the arrow fizzled out. We did get about .12" of rain. If El Nino still existed full blown, that
amount might've been higher, and the radar images would probably be totally different.

Ok, I think I might bite the bullet and buy this.

1. What's everyone using, Level2 or 3?

2. Do you upload these images to your website?

3. Are/can they be animated?

4. What if anything special do I need/need to know to make this work properly?

Thanks in advance guys!

You can also use JavaScript, but I like CNYWeather's method better on a page dedicated to only showing the radar.

To show an animated thumbnail view on my home page I use this (it's showing the latest image twice for clarity)
Code: [Select]
<script language="JavaScript">
<!--

if (document.images) { // Preloaded images
demo1 = new Image();
demo1.src = "kiln_br1_0.jpg";

demo2 = new Image();
demo2.src = "kiln_br1_9.jpg";

demo3 = new Image();
demo3.src = "kiln_br1_8.jpg";

demo4 = new Image();
demo4.src = "kiln_br1_7.jpg";

demo5 = new Image();
demo5.src = "kiln_br1_6.jpg";

demo6 = new Image();
demo6.src = "kiln_br1_5.jpg";

demo7 = new Image();
demo7.src = "kiln_br1_4.jpg";

demo8 = new Image();
demo8.src = "kiln_br1_3.jpg";

demo9 = new Image();
demo9.src = "kiln_br1_2.jpg";

demo10 = new Image();
demo10.src = "kiln_br1_1.jpg";

demo11 = new Image();
demo11.src = "kiln_br1_0.jpg"

}

function timeimgs(numb) { // Reusable timer
thetimer = setTimeout("imgturn('" +numb+ "')", 900);
}

function imgturn(numb) { // Reusable image turner
if (document.images) {

if (numb == "11") { // This will loop the image
document["demo"].src = eval("demo11.src");
timeimgs('1');
}

else { document["demo"].src = eval("demo" + numb + ".src");

timeimgs(numb = ++numb);
}
}
}

// -->
</script> <a href="/radarloop.php"><img name="demo" src="kiln_br1_0.jpg" title="Click for Full Size Radar Loop" alt="Local Doppler Radar Display" width="300" height="180" border=0></a><script type="text/javascript">timeimgs('1');</script>

Sorry for the questions, I had it installed on my laptop but let it expire before I got around to actually trying it.

Can all of the different displays be animated?
It seems like I've seen different backgrounds, some just black, some topo, etc, does all that comes with it or are there add-ons that might be extra?
How hardware intensive is it?

Thanks!
Title: Re: Post your Weather Radar screenshots of GRLevel!

If by different displays be animated, you mean the different radar types, Yep.
Great script on here for it. Took a little fiddling but got it going great.

Backgrounds, you choose. http://grlevelxstuff.com/
They are all free, plus tons of other goodies.

Only add on I got now was the MichiganWXsystem placefiles for watches/warnings

http://www.michiganwxsystem.com/places.php  $55.00 a year but I think worth it.
Title: Re: Post your Weather Radar screenshots of GRLevel!
Post by: DaculaWeather on December 18, 2010, 07:45:06 AM
Ok, I see all of those different place files, can you explain those a little? I'm assuming they're almost like layers that overlay the radar?
Title: Re: Post your Weather Radar screenshots of GRLevel!
Post by: CNYWeather on December 18, 2010, 08:01:03 AM
Yes I think thats a good way to explain it.

I dont have any clue how they work but would assume they draw polygons
by using NWS data. I know they have lat/long in the files so I figure thats how the
placefiles know where to draw the polygons.

I'm using the watch/warnings placefile. It will show all watches and or warnings.
GRLevel3 does have a built-in option to show warnings also. Severe weather like
tornado, thunderstorm or flood warnings. It wont show watches or any type of winter
advisories unless you use a pay-to-play placefile.
Title: Re: Post your Weather Radar screenshots of GRLevel!
Post by: DaculaWeather on December 18, 2010, 08:06:08 AM
I can see that can add up too! I'd love to spend the $300/yr and get it all, that would be pretty neat, but I'm not there yet. I need as many people hitting my site as you have first! I did manage to get in the top 25 on USAWeatherfinder the other day, but dropped back down yesterday, we had a slow weather day!

I'm assuming that this installs in it's own directory, no need to worry about any integration with anything else?
Title: Re: Post your Weather Radar screenshots of GRLevel!
Post by: CNYWeather on December 18, 2010, 08:20:52 AM
I'm lucky with all the hits Steve. Trust me. Once you get "found" that helps a lot.
Winter here is nuts. I get 2x as many hits than in the summertime. It started slow.
You send info to your local TV stations? I email 3x a day with the weather report.

The webcam helps too. WeatherBonk, Weather underground all supply hits. I get a lot
of "So are you Tony from Westmoreland who's camera I see on TV?"  Even from my relatives lol

I also put Google Ads on there too. I figured what the heck. I've got $7.00 in the bank since
September. That helps out.

I'm scrimping on my site. Last thing I bought was the placefiles. That was
before the wife lost her job. So no more buying anything for now.

GRLevel 3 installed like a charm in it's own directory. The only thing I dont like
is that after a restart, the program doesnt remember your zoom level and you have
to manually start the FTP again. I've made it so Windows Update goes while I'm home
so I can remember to start that up again. I've also got it on another computer instead of
my WD one, 'cause there are 3 users on this and nobody remembers to "sign back in on dad's name"
therefore the radar wont FTP because I'm not on my screen name. I'm sure there's a workaround
for that but I havent found it yet.

Title: Re: Post your Weather Radar screenshots of GRLevel!
Post by: DaculaWeather on December 18, 2010, 08:26:05 AM
I was wondering about the FTP part, I might just use Fling to do the uploads, it's uploading everything else!

I think I'll go ahead and download it on the weather computer and start playing with it. I'm off for the next two weeks, and it's raining today, so I might as well be doing something non-productive!

Thanks for your help Tony (and Andrew!).

I've got the web site building down...  :-) I'm always adding something new so I figured this would be the next thing! I just like all the bells and whistles. I've got it working and uploading right now, I just need to get animation working on my website now.

Cant use Fling really. GR3 has some funky internal stuff that prevents that.  Also the GR3 does a bunch of renaming of your last series of images on your site, which works perfectly with Ken's scripts, and other animator scripts.

Andrew

I was wondering about the FTP part, I might just use Fling to do the uploads, it's uploading everything else!

Thanks for your help Tony (and Andrew!).

 I think site hits are more where you are located. Kinda like real estate where your located determines how many hits on gets. Being in the cool north  where no one is interested till cruise ship times one to 2 hits an week are the norm  comes about April I start to pick up.  That radar stuff is nice  but for here on my site it would be completely useless. In fact  even the NWS forecast office doesn't get  an view of radar over  their position and they are closer.

Got a test page working using FLanis, testing different things. http://www.daculaweather.com/radar/ffc_f/grl3_v2.php I need to find out more about backgrounds.
You're right John, I think in those areas where you're saturated with choices about where to get your weather from, the harder it is to get exposure for your site. If you're more isolated and have good info, more people will come to your site because it might be the only credible source for weather info around. Quite a few of the top sites on USAWeatherfinder are locations that are more remote.

Using the AllisonHouse option for METARS, isn't there a way to display the temp etc outside the icon for the METAR? I have (as you can see) the little wind flag working and specified display everything, but it isn't. Anyone?

Find the logo you want to use
Rename it "logo.png"
Place it in the "GRLevel3" folder (inside "GRLevelX", inside "Program Files")

More info here: http://www.allisonhouse.com/grlevelx/manual/grlevel3/

And on the GRLevelXStuff site!!!!

3. Are/can they be animated?

You can also use JavaScript, but I like CNYWeather's method better on a page dedicated to only showing the radar.

To show an animated thumbnail view on my home page I use this (it's showing the latest image twice for clarity)
Code: [Select]
<script language="JavaScript">
<!--

if (document.images) { // Preloaded images
demo1 = new Image();
demo1.src = "kiln_br1_0.jpg";

demo2 = new Image();
demo2.src = "kiln_br1_9.jpg";

demo3 = new Image();
demo3.src = "kiln_br1_8.jpg";

demo4 = new Image();
demo4.src = "kiln_br1_7.jpg";

demo5 = new Image();
demo5.src = "kiln_br1_6.jpg";

demo10 = new Image();
demo10.src = "kiln_br1_1.jpg";

demo11 = new Image();
demo11.src = "kiln_br1_0.jpg"

}

function timeimgs(numb) { // Reusable timer
thetimer = setTimeout("imgturn('" +numb+ "')", 900);
}

function imgturn(numb) { // Reusable image turner
if (document.images) {

if (numb == "11") { // This will loop the image
document["demo"].src = eval("demo11.src");
timeimgs('1');
}

else { document["demo"].src = eval("demo" + numb + ".src");

}

These storms were caused by the same system that is bringing me 10 degree temps, 30 mph winds, and below zero wind chills. And very little snow.

It's only New Years Eve and there's already that spark of excitement in me wanting more severe weather (even though it can kill, or potentially damage and/or injure).

This one falls under the "junk/random" category - It's 4 frames showing a flock of birds leaving Port Union (north of Cincinnati), Ohio last week.
Unfortunately even the jpg version was too big to attach here - so here's a link to the png version: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30112397@N06/5325535883/

I've seen similar events on radar before. In my college town there are birds galore (and bugs…especially in the late summer). I see them on radar at just around sunrise and again around sunset.

And then there's a Texas radar catching bats being sucked in by a meso. (http://www.spc.noaa.gov/coolimg/index.html)

If you guys are going to be posting pages full of images, you really need to work on image compression and resizing.

Images in Post 134 above total almost 4Mb

Total page weight is closer to 10Mb, maybe over.  I've seen downloadable programs that are lighter weight.

As far as I can see, there is NO reason at all to post any image that is .png, in fact, I'd like to see the board limited to  .jpg and .gif only.

Nor is there any reason to post any image over 100Kb, preferably they should be less than 75K.

Sorry about that... I have not had dial up in about 7 years and have forgot how hard it is to view large items . Does making them thumbnails make it better?

Okay. In the interest of a few of us who have limited bandwidth, less-than-ideal internet connections or what have you, I have converted all of my radar screenshots to thumbnails. However, they still remain as .png because they are on Photobucket and I refuse to remove all of them in the interest of re-uploading them as .jpg.

However, there are still a few posts in this thread that still require bandwidth.

Please remember in the future if you're going to post in this thread to

1) Post a link or a thumbnail.

2) Upload as a .jpg (JPEG).

Chris

Speaking of GRLevel3 specifically, why is .png the only option under saving images?

No doubt about that!  I was one of the beta testers before GR3 was ever available to the public.  Except for vacations and stuff, I don't believe a day has gone by that I didn't have GR3 running on one of my PCs.  I also own GR2, but barely ever use it.  It's an outstanding investment.

I think I'll be posting here a lot with my new toy! :grin:

These are 4 radar picks from Pueblo, CO

The top left is base reflectivity 0.5 degrees, with a slight comma hook echo forming, prompting a tornado warning, the top right is storm relative velocity 0.5 degrees, where there is a combining of light inflow and outflow winds, the bottom right is VIL, and these extremely high readings covering a lot of ground indicates very large hail (That triangle on there is reading 3" hail!), and the bottom left is echo tops, indicating that precipitation is occurring at 45K feet.

Nice pictures! I really like the last one..I have some pictures from GR3 Vs 1.92 that I might put on here this evening...Are those last two pictures smoothed radar imagery?? If not could you tell me where you got it? It looks pretty nice (I dont have smoothing capabilities).

Yes, they are smoothed, using live radar grabs from GRXAnalyst (Level 2 data).

GRXAnalyst is expensive, but if you've got the $$$ there's nothing like "live" 3-D imaging...

Here's a screenshot with 4 windows Using Weather Studio for national radar imaging, and three GRXAnalyst windows:
1- Level 2 radar in the Florida Straight
2- Cross-section of thunderstorm (Raw data)
3- 3-D radar volume - deck to 50K ft. of the same area (smoothed)

(The x-section and volume are marked with a white line and box in the Flat level 2 radar window)

This is a picture of the same cell that Hhabilis showed a couple posts up from the South Dakota/Nebraska border. I have heard that Reed Timmer got a good intercept of the storm and it was confirmed that it was a massive tornado (Though not much of a fan of Timmer #-o)

That Carney storm looked like a real bad one. Here is another side by side shot of it. There was a tornado reported just south of Arcadia as you can see on there.

Here's a nice shot from the Vane Gawker of Hurricane Arthur as it made its way onshore in NC a few days ago:

1 hour rotation results of a supercell over Springfield, Illinois. Luckily, only a funnel cloud was reported near the capitol.

Nothing much going on down here in SELA...just spotty coastal showers tonight.

Things are a little more active across Nebraska and Kansas tonight however.  (GREarth screenshot)

Nice font for your towns there. I really like that! It's nice to see things quiet on my end. Would be ok to not see a drop of rain for a couple of weeks  ;)
