SQL used to backup web site
« on: February 26, 2024, 04:31:09 AM »
I have a quick question for those who may be a little more versed in web hosting than myself.
My host over all does a good job but the only way they offer the ability to back up my web site is by subscription.
However there is a SQL database included with the package. Question is can you use this as a sitewide backup and if so
could you direct me to a tutorial, whitepaper or some instruction on this ?   I think it may be remotely possible but not sure if it would practical.  I could continue using Filezilla but if this "idea" would be more efficient it would be worth a shot.

Thanks In Advance!

A SQL backup is only of a SQL database -- it doesn't back up the filesystem (all your pages/scripts).  The stock Saratoga template set does not use SQL at all.

Your current backup of your website files is likely your offline local copy on the PC/Mac you do your configuration on and the source files for your FileZilla uploads.

Thanks Ken,
This is more or less what I was thinking, an article from IBM touched on file backup but it didn't really specify what type of file it was capable of working with. I'll just make sure my local working copy is up to date and maybe making a copy occasionally by FTP.  I'm really bad for letting updates slip by me and also misplacing them

Thanks for the help!
