Member only pages
« on: July 22, 2018, 05:00:14 PM »
Hi guys,
I'm maintaining the website for our choir.
The member pages are protected by .htacces and .htpasswd files.
At the moment I do this manually but I like to automate this so that the members can change the passwd or can be send an email when they have forgotten the passwd.
As I want to keep control I would like to give the initial passwd with login because it's not the purpose that everyone can make a login (people not belonging tko the choir).
I looked  around but I don't see any satisfying solution.
Anyone has a suggestion for this or has experience with this ?
Thanks for any input.

What type of information are you posting and in what format?

Forums like this have that function built in...  pages that only logged in members can read, or even see.  If you can use this type of format, this forum package (SMF) is free and very easy to install.  Some webhosts even have custom installers available

We don't use a forum.
On the member pages files are available like meeting minutes of the steering committee, music scores, member lists with addresses, a member photo album,..
So files in a directory structure, there is no discussion forum.
These files are not meant to be read by non-members.
For communication we use a "closed" mailing list.
I hope this clarify a little bit.

Sounds like you COULD do all of that with a forum like this.

Minutes could be posted as Announcements.
Score should be able to be posted within a typical post, maybe as images or the way people post charts.
Member lists are easy and can be edited.
Photo albums are common in these forum packages.

Discussions could be added to most of the above as well as allowing other conversations.

Some of these have Calendars too for event scheduling.

The key is that the security and viewing rights are already handled which is what you seem to be after.
