Windows "gadget" for lightning map display
« on: August 28, 2013, 09:02:13 AM »
There is a Windows 7 or Vista desktop "gadget" application that can be used to display the current "Live Map" from blitzortung.org on your desktop.

The gadget application may be downloaded here (use the second download link - the first is "bait" to try to get you to download the 7zip software and other adware):

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Windows-Widgets/Widget-Miscellaneous/Static-Web-Image.shtml

Install the app and configure it to point to this URL:

Set the app to refresh at 1 minute intervals.

The gadget can be placed in corner of your desktop, where it will show a miniature version of the "Live Map". Simply clicking on the small map will instantly expand the map to full size for quick checking of lightning in the US. The map returns to the small size by clicking anywhere else on your desktop.

Quite convenient!

There is also an Android App for Blitzortung although I haven't had much luck with it. I haven't had the time to sit down and play with it. Just go to the Google App store and search for Blitzortung.

The Windows Gadget or the Android app?

The android app uses the old data source, without the Red stations included. Therefore, the coverage is lacking.

Hopefully this will be corrected soon.

Installed the Windows Gadget, set size to 130x130 and it works great.

Thanks for the heads-up about this!

Yep, installed the windows gadget and it works great. Also used the 130 x 130 sizing and it looks nice. I set the refresh rate at 1 minute.

Nice addition to my desktop!
