RED Shutting Down
« on: March 31, 2014, 12:10:37 AM »
Just discovered that my Red is shutting down. Thought that my power supply was the issue... not the problem. Tried another power supply and it started working again. Within a minute or so it quit again. Going to leave the power off for the night and try it again in the morning.

Has anyone else had this trouble?

Well, that is a bummer...

Have you checked power supply voltages to see what they are? Any other symptoms you can give us to help narrow this down? LED illumination look normal or not?

Haven't had such a problem with my RED (so far)...

It just shuts down totally.... no lights, no display, nothing.

Calling it a night, I'll turn it on in the morning and see what happens.

If everything is completely off, no GPS LED, etc. I would start at the 5V USB connector and work toward the downstream components. If 5V is lost, is there a short that the power supply (wall wart) is shutting down? Or the solder at the connector is suspect?

If you have 5V at L41 (both sides), then check the output pin of the LV33VC regulator (3.3V).
It could be a cold solder joint that finally oxidized or moved and opened up. Good luck and good hunting.

Thanks Greg.

I'll get the meter out in a little while and let you know what I find.

Just powered it up and it seems to be working... using a different power supply. I hope my TeraDak U9VA w/USB is not the issue.

I will let it go and see what happens.

Still lookin' good! You should add your station number to your wxforum signature. I also notice a broken image icon in your signature.

Looks like my fancy power supply was the issue.

Thanks for the reminder to fix my signature Don.

John, "sacreyweather", just finished rearranging my site for me... he liked my idea for the new look and even changed his to be similar.  He did all the work, I just had an idea. I really like the new look. Provides more viewing area for the data by moving the menu bar to the top with drop down options, this is something John has a had for a while. While still utilizing Ken and Scott's scripts.

I think that the TeraDak is high quality from the construction and performance standpoint, but this raises questions about the reliability.

My TeraDak is still chugging along. Sorry to hear that yours gave out.

It might be a hassle with international shipping, but will the supplier make good on it? You haven't had it very long.
The circuitry didn't look exotic when I opened it up for a peek. Maybe you could check to see if the transformer is still putting out voltage. Maybe a regulator went bad, and you could find a replacement.

Greg, you're right you never know on a new product about reliability. I will open it up and check it out when in the next few days.  Because of the international issues, I'm not going to contact them. Who knows, maybe it something simple.  I'll let you know.

Not upset, just disappointed.

Joe,

Didn't you buy a nice high-current supply with a linear regulator? Was that the one that failed?

I did Don.  I'm hoping that when I open it up, I can find the problem and get it back in service. It really is a nice unit.

*****  UPDATE  *****

My TeraDak is back up and running.  Could not find anything that was causing the issue.... until, I accidentally discovered, while checking for power at the USB connector pins on the board that there was a poor solder joint. Touched all of them up and I'm back in business.  \:D/
