Another WMR 200 sensor Question
« on: September 05, 2009, 01:26:06 AM »
Hi everyone.  I finally put my WMR 200 outdoor sensor up on my roof today with the wind gauge.  The sensor is inside the OS version of a radiation shield {?} mounted on a pole about ten feet off the ground.  Underneath are roofing shingles, which receive strong sunlight most of the day.

It seems the temp was reading about 10 degrees higher than what I expected.  Is this because of the location..such as the heat radiating up from the shingles?  I suspect it may have to come off the roof and located elsewhere.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks

Greg

Hi Greg.

I would say your problem is heat radiation from the shingles. I have my sensor on a pole about 15 feet above my roof, but my roof is concrete tiles, which radiates less heat than timber. I also have a remote sensor located in permanent shade in another part of my garden/yard and there is never more than 2 or 3 degrees difference between them.

Would it be possible to either higher the sensor or move to another location?

Ideally it would be useful in a situation like yours to use a remote sensor as your main temperature sensor. but unfortunately that isn't possible with VWS. For this and other problems I have been having recently, I am seriously thinking of going over to WD. If I do I shall leave till the start of a new year with a complete fresh start.

Hope this helps.

Alan.

I have placed my sensor in the shadow, were the sun never reach it, and it seems to give me good readings. I think the OS radiation shield is way to small to be placed in direct sunlight.
Another idea is to build a FARS.

If you haven't looked at it, here's a great file on sensor placement:

Thanks everyone!  Several years ago I bought a radiation shield from Ambient, and I will move the sensor off the roof into a more shaded area with the real radiation shield.  I don't think OS put much into the design of theirs.

Axelvold....very impressive looking shield.   =D>

Thanks again..Greg
