Win10 Computer Won't Wake Up
« on: March 17, 2020, 02:23:00 PM »
I have a refurbished Dell for use in garage.  It runs Win10, can’t tell ya much more about it because it is asleep (or hibernating) and won’t wake up.  I left it on one day and it went to sleep.

Anyway, have done multiple searches and all the “solutions” assume you can access the system and change certain options.  The darn thing won’t wake up so I can’t change any options. ](*,)

So, anyone here have any experience with a similar situation?  Otherwise to an old boater it looks to be an anchor.

Thanks for any guidance there may be to share.

Desktop P/C or Laptop?

If Desktop, un-plug for 10 seconds.  Turn on again, does it go into BIOS screen?

If laptop.  up-plug, remove battery.  Press power button and hold for a second or so.  Replace battery.  Plug-in again.  Then restart as above.

Sorry, desk-top.
Left in unplugged for over 3 weeks (drain battery?) and nothing.  The little Dell light just flashes yellow as when in sleep mode.  Nothing on the screen.

The screen is switched on and video cable attached correctly, I presume?  Do you see anything on the screen when you turn it on?

If nothing, can you remove the case and check all power cables where they go from PSU to motherboard.  Also check all cards, especially video card are seated on the motherboard.  Then try to restart.  Anything on the screen then?  Looking for blinking cursor top left or anything else

Appreciate your input.
Have tried all you mention and still nothing, screen is blank.  Hard drives does not spin, all card cords connected correctly.
Oh, yea the screen is turned on and connected correctly too  [tup]

you might need to replace the CMOS battery on the motherboard

Try popping the battery out for a few seconds then replacing.  That will reset the CMOS.  Then try a new battery.

I've had that a few times.  Do you have one you can swap out?

Tried the battery as noted and still no joy.
Will see if I can dig up another power supply.
Will keep ya all posted, thanks again for input.

When you said refurbished, what do you mean?  Did you buy it that way, or did you upgrade something?  Have you had it working before this?

Yes bought from Best Buy as "refurbished".  Yes it had been working for over year & half, till now.

If there is absolutely nothing showing on the screen, cursor, BIOS etc, it sounds like a video card failure.  Does it have a separate video card or is the video plugged straight into the MB?

The thought occurred to me that the machine may be trying to install one or more of the last large WIN 10 updates... I've had a couple of cases thinking something was wrong...  One of those updatees was huge, and took better part of a hour on one of my older machines...
Try a cold power initialize:.... press and hold the power button, while holding it, remove the power cord, keep holding the button about 30 - 60 seconds, then release,  Plug back in... then turn power on....  then wait and watch awhile, making sure monitor is on....

Surely there would be a BIOS post screen when switching on, where-ever a Windows update had got to?

Another suggestion is to try a different monitor. Maybe the conputer is fine and it is just the monitor that is bad. But another possibility is that the monitor has been changed to show the wrong input. Some monitors have a digital and analog port or multiple HDMI inputs.

Another thought from me.  Does it make any beep noises after you turn it on.  The BIOS usually chirps various combinations of beeps.  Some to confirm OK, some are like error codes.  If none heard, it is an ominous silence!

depends on where it is in the process, and wheether or ot ite's humg fo a bit... iet'll turn the monitor on and off, reboot, with or without bios... etc..etc.. stupid ... like the old method better where the user had some control. and it varies across my machines depending on age, original system, etc.

HEY>>COULD YOU HAVE A BAD BIOS BATTERY????

Video built in to mother board.  Could be SOL on this one.

Yep tried this too, still no joy on 2 other monitors.  But thanks for the suggestion(s).

Does the motherboard have swollen or leaking capacitors? I've saved a few computers buy replacing capacitors.

Since you hear the hard drive spin up, if there is data to be saved it may be salvageable if you connect it to a different computer. If there is nothing important then it sounds like they system is done. Probably not worth getting a video card to test if the internal video is bad.

Oh, I misread. In that case its fate is undetermined as it could be motherboard or power supply problem.
