Station webcam improved updating
« on: October 31, 2017, 04:18:02 PM »
At the risk of jinxing my station, recent webcam updating seems to be vastly improved over the discontinuity that was occuring a few weeks ago. My webcam sends images every 5 minutes, and today WU was frequently updating the image every 5 minutes, with some longer intervals of 10-25 minutes.

Is anyone else seeing similar improvement?

p.s. I don't need to worry about jinxing my station because the other day I lost the gold star due to a power outage and some router issues, and what could be worse than that?

Checked many times today, and my PWS webcam image on WU is updating every 5 minutes. Kudos (for now) WU  =D>

I view one at a ski area that uses WU. It hasn't been accessable since 11/7. Now, the page shows an XML error.

Figures, they just started making snow this week. That's always fun to watch.

Ah well, it was a good run. I figure my webcam updating was consistently every five minutes for eleven straight days.  This morning's image is from 4 am, five hours ago.
All good things must come to an end I guess. :???:

My webcam had been updating perfect since 10/23/17.  This morning it stopped updating at 3:38AM MST.  I emailed support and Jeff Masters as my usual during the problems of webcam updating started.

At 10:25AM today I got an email from Jeff.

"Hi David, thanks for all your reporting of issues with webcams over the past few months. Due to the difficulty we've had maintaining this feature, its negative ROI, and the downsizing of our staff, it has been decided to drop the webcam feature from WU on December 15. An announcement will go up on our webcam page on Wednesday. I'm sorry to see this feature go."

Needless to say, I am very disappointed.  I have been uploading data for over 12 years.  I think the webcams tell a valuable story - more than just the raw data.

Got a nine day run.  Oh well, all four quit at 4:00 am.

I will keep uploading,  when it works, it works.

I maintain two sites in my county and both cameras stopped updating to WU at the same time - around 3:30 am PST.

Guess I may as well shut down the upload.

I wonder if they factored into their ROI analysis all the views they get, and may not get in the future, because of the presence of the webcams. Guess it's finally time to figure out how to develop my own website.

I may want to look into Weather Bug.

Weather Bug hosts webcams?

Maybe I'll shut down my PWS data uploads to WU the same day they pull the webcams.

If in fact true... why so surprised?  #-o
Hints have been given....
examples...
This is sounding a lot like the scenario developing last December, just before WunderWeenies flushed all the NOAA Weather Radio streams.... might start thinking about alternatives.. hope I'm wrong...
Some of us still predict they'll dump webcams unless they can generate consistent revenue from your hard work... by reselling access, etc... which they couldn't with the radio streams....
and I've a feeling our next big project may be 'weather cams'.... I simply don't believe that "Big Blue" aka 'Weather Company" "Used2B Weather Underground" will continue such without some major diddling,...   all they 'really' want is your stats, which they can scrape from CWOP/Mesonet...  so it's really getting 'close' to a time PWS folks need to speak up... it's OUR product... not theirs.
...but, then, I've been labeled a chronic WU critic for some time....

Agree.  What are alternatives?
