Title: Which radio????
Post by: downtown0309 on December 24, 2013, 03:25:17 PM
Hello, I'm new to the forums here and becoming sorta a weather nut ! I have a Midland WR-100 that is about 2 years old. This is the second Midland that has messed up on me. During the last round of storms we had, it didn't alarm at all. When I pressed the weather buttons all the channels had a high pitched tone, no static. After researching online, it seems this is a common issue with this radio. With 3 children in my house, I want something I can count on. I don't think I will get a Midland again. I would like some advice on which radios to look at. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I want reliability. Through some reviews, I have seen the Sangean CL100 mentioned several times. Is this a good one? All advice welcome. Thank you!

You should try the Reecom R-1630, it has Defeat Siren and Area Encoding, you can also adjust the siren level and see a catalog of previously issued alerts, including the time they were issued.

I also have the Reecom and I like it a lot. It has good sensitivity and works well.
You might want to keep an eye out for the "Public Alert" logo on the weather radios.

There is more info here as well as a pretty comprehensive list of manufacturers:

I also have an older model "Weather EAR" from MTS. They have the "Weather EAR II" currently.

I, also highly recommend a Reecom 1630. Have had one for several years and love it. Like you, I had a Midland WR100 that was given to us by the Saline County EM as part of a county wide program, since a lot of my county is pretty rural and does not have sirens. The radio worked for about 2 years or so, then started making the high pitched scream. I purchased a Reecom and haven't looked back since.

Here is a link to one on Amazon.com

I have a Reecom 1650 and like the radio.

However, the way Reecom treats their customers with issues has me no longer endorsing their products.  If you look at some of the ratings on Amazon and the responses directly from Reecom, I wonder how they can treat customers in that manner and not feel repercussions.

For that manner the only radio I can suggest is the Sangean CL100 (I have one as well as the Reecom).

Here is one example.
