What Hit Counter to use
« on: December 28, 2010, 09:12:16 PM »
My first attempt at adding hit counter on my webpage did not pan out - worked for a week and then disappeared.  What do you use, any suggestions and anything to watch out for?

I like the flag counter.  It tells you where everybody's from:

I use to use Statcounter on my personal website, had it for years and years. I think it's still on some of the pages (that I haven't updated in years)!

I use and recommend www.sitemeter.com.  It offers daily summary emails of your hits.  It tracks your visitor by OS, Browser, ISP, IP, and geographic location.  It offers geographic map plotting.  And the best of all it is FREE.  But of course they offer even more stats for you to digest in a paid version.

Here are some screen captures of my FREE account to let you see some of the options of looking at your hit data.  (Just Click on the thumbnails).

Thanks everyone for your responses.  I found a lot of choices in my google search and looking at the ones being used by the forum members here certainly helps.  I like the mapped ones but have registered with Sitemeter for their report detail, thanks Sam and good to see you haven't lost any time to be back on the forum =D>, and hope to get it added later today.

I understand this will record each hit on the website, and I have my webcam link on the webpage so anyone there will be counted but will that also count direct access to my webstream at http://99.249.212.167:8081, which I presume is no, and if not is there another way to count/log that?

Thanks again,
Paul

Steve/Sam,

There apparently are two versions, which one do you use or recommend for someone who is lacking in html and knows nothing yet how to use Javascript?

From Sitemeter
Quote
To track the traffic to your site, there are two versions of the
Site Meter HTML available. One uses javascript and the other doesn't.
The javascript Site Meter can be more difficult to add to a page
(when using some HTML editors), but it allows you to track the
original URL from which your visitors came before linking to your
site. Because many email servers will filter out emails that
contain javascript or even HTML, it was not included
in this email.

You can get the HTML for your account and the instructions for
adding it by logging into Site Meter at http://www.sitemeter.com and
selecting the MANAGER link from the top of the page. Then, from the
account manager page, select "HTML CODE" to get the HTML for your
account. From the account manager page, you can also make changes
to your Site Meter account like updating your email address, your
site's url, or the style of your counter.

I use the Javascript version.  I copied the code given to me and inserted it into my html page via Dreamweaver.

=D> and very happy.  That was too simple so I must have missed doing something, but since it's working won't worry about it until it breaks ;)

I just checked out your site, so you should see a hit from Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA in your stats.

I have received 9 of the following hits all showing the same location 2,105 km north of me and showing my webcam IP Address, but more or less time of visit and more or less pages viewed and some with different browser.  I have heard Yawcam sound to indicate a visit on some of these.  So when anyone clicks on the webcam link on the webpage then Sitemeter will not show the actual visitor's location, instead for all of them showing Rogers.com (which is my ISP) at a site 2,105 km up near Hudson Bay which is not very inhabited.  This does not then show a good or accurate hit location for these visitors.  I am presuming anyone visiting and just viewing the pages without clicking on the webcam link will be shown correctly.  Does this sound a reasonable conclusion?

Example of Sitemeter visitor detail:
