Telling time by the stars
« on: September 21, 2010, 01:08:29 AM »
I found these 2 links the other day. I always knew you could tell the time from the Big Dipper and North Star from when I was a teenager, but I never knew exactly how until I remembered that I had the Internet and it should have the answer. Eureka! Here are 2 write ups on the subject. I thought the info was pretty cool and perhaps a good addition to a weather site.

Thanks for the articles.  I have on my computer a clock that tells me the local sidereal time.  I am writing this at 2:14 pm and the local sidereal time is 12hr42min.
That is the 12hr 42min right ascension line is on the meridian.  I have always loved using sidereal time.
The program I use is THE SKY astronomy software.  But, there are many more that show the sidereal time.  It especially helps during the day when you cannot see the stars.  Or you could just use a star chart.
