« on: February 12, 2010, 08:42:24 AM »
If you ever use the search function in windows to find stuff on your computer there is a new Ver 4 that is available for different windows platforms the link below is for the XP but after you get there at the bottom of the page there was other links to different Windows Ver. The new ver. now has a preview window so if you click on a searched file it give you a look. + other stuff was upgraded in the search program.

The last time I let the Windows Search update/upgrade install, it slowed my machine down with too much hard drive access all the time with it's indexing duties....  I stepped backwars with system restore, and I now refuse to do that install and "hide" the update in windows update.

My experience was the same as Sam's.  Nirsoft's SearchMyFiles (free!) is far faster and less intrusive/slow

Ditto here - no appreciable degradation of the system while it was indexing and I'm amazed at how fast a search is completed now, compared to the old version. It literally takes only seconds for it to finish. I also like the window showing the contents of whatever it finds - very convenient and useful.

The indexing/speed was my concern. But that file preview sounds pretty handy.

The one thing that would be really nice would be for the results to highlight whatever it was you were searching for. As it is you have to wade through the entire file to find your searched-for text.

You may be able to do a sub-search with a Ctl-F to find it more quickly. I haven't tried that but it may work too.
