Wow,
That is a very low pressure for a non-tropical storm. Which brings to mind does anyone know about how low the pressure dipped to in the Great Blizzard of '78....1978 that is.

Thanks,
Tim

The drifts and winds were the worst part here.  It was the first time and about the only time I've seen lightning and thunder along with snow.

I was living on the sw side of Grand Rapids,MI during this event and the only way you could get any where was by a snowmobile. The drifts where as high as the overpasses. I was only 11 years old at the time but I still remember as if it happened yesterday.

I'm thinking that was the big snow we had in N. Carolina... I remember walking to the grocery store with a friend who had a sled... (when I lived in Durham)

Three guesses as to what was sold out... bread, milk, beer... (same as for hurricanes!)

They used graders to clear the snow off roads and parking lots...

There were two great Blizzards of 1978. One on Jan. 26 in the Midwest, the other (the one I lived through) in New England beginning Feb. 6. The New England storm was and still is the single most impressive weather event I have experienced in my 56 years. A fellow NE Weather spotter, Ric Werme, has written a great piece on his recollection of that storm,  along with an addendum that provides links to more accounts of the storm along with links to first hand accounts of the Midwest event.  Enjoy!

Also there was the Blizzard of '77

What an awful storm that was. I was fifteen at the time and stranded on my school bus for over two hours. We had been going up the Niagara Escarpment on our afternoon route and the bus konked out and there were no radios on the buses back then. I can't remember how we managed, but we got home.

For those statistically minded among you here is an article by another NE Weather spotter (these people are GOOD) detailing the intensity of last week's east coast storm and the likely hood of it's recurrence. It truly was a historical storm for this time of year.
