Storms moving in.
« on: September 28, 2009, 08:06:13 PM »
Hurricane/Typhoon KETSANA is closing in and presently in a direct line with Chiang Mai. Now upgraded to cat.2. (Chiang Mai is on the left side of the map just to the right of the last "n" in Yangon). The Thai Met. Dept. has been watching this and issuing warnings. They estimate at it's current speed the storm will make it to Thailand tomorrow (30th). It just made landfall in Vietnam. Following closely are two more storms in the same path. Lots of "bucket tipping" ahead.

Good luck there Dan.  I will keep the threads lively here, while you have bigger things to worry about.
...Oh by the way, If things get bad, and looting breaks out, I need a new 50inch HDTV. ;)

Thanks Mark and Sam. Should be interesting and with the ground already saturated from the depression that just passed, time to get the backup gas water pump readied. I've already gone around the yard cleaning out drains this morning. We have a stream behind the house I watch real close during stuff like this. That can rise from a couple of inches to several feet in no time at all.

Hopefully the winds will die down a lot before it gets to where you are at.  I hope you have good drainage where you are.  Drinking water, batteries, toilet paper, etc.  Batten down the hatches!   8-[

Drainage isn't too bad under normal, regular rain spells, but gully washer downpours that hang around can cause local area flooding. Back when I was dating my wife, I came by here to visit and it rained so hard and for so long that the streets were all under water (foot or so in some places) and the kitchen/dining rooms here were as well. I helped to scoop and pump water out but as you pumped it out it returned just as fast. Since then we've had several truckloads of fill dirt delivered and the kitchen/dining room leveled and rebuilt on higher ground. Haven't had "test conditions" since to see if we did any good. Possibly tomorrow?. Hope not.

This might not be the best time to damn up that stream and install an in-ground swimming pool.

ha ha ha, if we get enough precip., we won't need to dam it up to get the pool. The two 36" drain tubes that pass it under the street can't keep up and it eventually fills high enough to pass over the street. Don't think I'd want to swim in that either. Who knows what gets dumped in upstream.

Update:  I woke this morning at 4AM anticipating 'Ketsana' unleashing it's fury on us, only to find it stalling and falling apart. It went from a cat. 2 down to a Tropical Storm and breaking apart once it hit land. Still looks like quite a bit of rain might come out of it later today but not the fury of a cat. 2 hurricane. Also a this time, 3 more rotating storms have popped up in it's wake following behind.

Thanks. I guess it's kind of like the opposite of washing your car if you want rain.  I get prepped for the winds and downpour then it dissipates.  Still have some activity ahead to keep an eye on though.

If I have a choice between what you all just went through, between flooding and boring, :-k  I prefer the slower, boring life. Easier on the nerves. ;)

So what's the weather doing today?  With all the tidal waves and earthquakes and hurricaines, you've got a lot to watch there!

Well as far as earthquakes and tsunami's go, we're quiet with that stuff (knock on wood). The category 2 hurricane yesterday slammed into Vietnam and disintegrated! Strange but glad that happened. Now there are more headed (one cat. 3) in our general direction but all is quiet here with just sprinkles and broken clouds. Actually brought the temps. down some and it's pretty nice right now.
Thanks for asking and hope all has settled over in your neck of the woods.

Anyone planning a trip to the Philippines or S/E Asia soon might want to reconsider. Hurricane 'Parma' was just upgraded to a cat.4 and one of the tropical storms behind it, 'Melor', just bumped up to a cat.1. I really feel for Manila and it's surrounding towns. They're still recovering from a hurricane a couple days ago where many people were killed and now these are closing in. :-|

Oh it has settled into a blah, cloudy, cool and occasional drizzle pattern for over a week now.   :-({|=

Pretty petty complaint compared to what some are putting up with at this point in time.   ;)

Now 'Melor' is a catagory 3 with 'Parma' hanging on to it's cat. 4 status. Both are now projected to hit the Taiwan, Southern China coast. Double whammy!  :-(
