Looking about 1/2 way through the movie when one of the many storms happens, I was looking at the chaser truck with all the stuff on top of it, and there was what appears to be a Young 5013 spinning furiously and shaking a bit as it points into the wind.

Right side of it is a flexible antenna bent, by the wind, exactly the wrong way it should be if the Young was doing its job.

The wind shear must be tremendous in those intense storms....

Accuracy and continuity don't seem to be high priority.

My wife and oldest son didn't see it, but I'm sure I saw it correctly.  At this afternoon's matinee, there were a boat load of 7 year olds, which my wife is sure will be keeping their folks awake the next time severe weather is forecast.  Apparently no flying cows or sharks, but plenty of chickens, and more than enough violent deaths.

Just the movie review for today.

Haven't seen it in years, but two things come to mind, the growling tornadoes always struck me as , and the end when the EF5 is destroying the barn while they're lashed to the plumbing. Not sure what would have killed them first, the debris, or being dismembered and found two weeks later a piece at a time. Plenty others to pick at as well.

I guess I wasn't expecting an Advanced Placement class in meteorology!
And the temporary suspension of disbelief was easier with things like space movies vs. something that approaches the possibility of reality.

Yes, the growling storm was laughable, along with a taker full of milk or gasoline, don't recall which, being thrown relatively intact through the air. That would be way beyond an F5, along with cows, combines and well anything else.

I've never been in a hurricane but seen plenty of Weather Channel guys/gals struggling to walk in the 130 mph winds with horizontal rain and debris, yet those little tin things that were allowed out into the winds in the movie seemed to all float gracefully straight up, oh so nicely.

You and I were never given the contract to be consultants for reality on this movie!

And after a few cocktails before the movie (I knew I'd need it), the crowd let me know their displeasure at my displeasure.  [-(

At least we had Helen and Jamie to soften the "experience".  =D>

Dale is talking about the new one called Twisters. Haven't watched a Hollywood movie in at least 10 years. No theater here anyway.

I was pleasantly surprised with how good it was. Tornadoes and tornado dynamics were about as realistic as you can get in Hollywood, and there was no forced romance or "climate change" agenda.

It was refreshing.

Cheers

Pilot:
Well, good.  I am indeed glad you enjoyed it.

Maybe when it is out on streaming I'll give it another look.  I may have just been in a pissy mood when I saw it.

It's not necessarily the wind itself, but all the flying crap (lumber, scythes, etc., etc.) that would concern me...

Greg,
I recall as a kid being fascinated by weather of seeing pictures in some science books on 2x4s having been impaled into a tree or substantial structure by a tornado.

I immediately had a lot of respect and more than a sprinkling of fear as to what flying debris can do.

I understand that in much of tornado country there are no basements in houses, for whatever reason. Even here in relatively calm Wisconsin, I am a bit afraid of being in a slab-built house or a trailer with the tin-can just tied down with anchors and some turnbuckles.

At least the cold war got people to build bomb shelters, which are perfect for holing up in during a strong storm cell passage.

I wonder how many of the 'storm shelters' that are of Wizard of Oz fame where people pulled open hinged doors to go down into really existed, or is it a myth that movie makers made dramatic and gullible people like me think they are all over the Oklahoma and Kansas prairies?

Well, now that I know you're speaking of a completely different movie (wondering why you brought up the old one and shows how much attention I pay to Hollyweird... never mind  #-o), here's a pic that shows how velocity makes up for lack of mass.

I thought the "storm shelters" were root cellars that were fairly common.

Depending on where one lived, root cellars are sometimes called 'fruit bins.' I've heard the terms used interchangeably. Either way, they were both underground.
