A story in the Minneapolis Star Tribune this past weekend reported on concerns some emergency managers have with areas of inadequate radar coverage in times of severe weather.  Interesting to read how they are trying to fix the problems.

Climavision is installing X-band radars in areas where the NEXRAD radars don't cover low-level altitudes. They started near Charlotte, NC last March. Their business model is to build the network and charge for data - kind of like the national lightning networks.

We have a similar situation here in New Zealand. The local council have decided to use a ships radar to create some rain radar coverage! Heres the link.
