Long lasting 1917 tornado
« on: May 26, 2009, 11:52:58 PM »
I saw a weather "Today in Histoy" item today.  On this day (26 May) 1917 a tornado touched down near Loisiana, Mo. close to noon.  It traveled on the ground 293 miles and lasted 7 hours 20 minutes!!!  Wow!

ps: I did some further investigation on this tornado and the website of the NWS of Central Illionois says that this was really 4-8 different tornadoes. The last one had a path of 155 miles.  Another report on Illinois tornadoes did not mention this.  At it's strongest it was an F4 on the original F-scale.  A total of 101 people were killed.
