I used to do data crunching for the SETI program many years ago.

Now that's a cool job, but also probably many many scope-doping too.

I used to run seti@home also few years ago. I gave it up after burning out a couple of old PC's. Those old clunkers just can't take a lot of cpu intensive stuff running 24/7. Since it looks like QCN isn't cpu intensive, I'm going to give it a try. I just now ordered the sensor.

BTW, someone else asked that same question about running continously on the QCN Help Desk and Message Boards http://qcn.stanford.edu/qcnalpha/forum_thread.php?id=160

Here is the link to the main page of their Help Desk and Message Boards so, if you have any questions about QCN, you can ask them there as well.

It's on my "to do" list as well. It will be interesting to see how it does for you. Of course, if there's no earthquakes (which is what we all hope for) you won't know, huh?

True, we don't really want earthquakes, but they are a fairly regular happening around here .. small ones (< 3.5 magnitude) are quite common in this area of California. Even the cement quarry a few miles away generally records a 2.0/2.1 magnitude when they are blasting :)

For you, I worry about the New Madrid fault zone .. the last big one there was a whopper in the 1800s.

Yeah, it made the Mississippi River run backwards. But that was for the initial filling of the new lakes that had been formed - Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.

The USGS has pages and pages of stuff about earthquakes.

There is one big plate that the eastern US sits on. I'm afraid that the next time it shakes, it will be very destructive. Nobody around here seems to think much about it. That will increase the destruction. Living in rural East Tennessee, I don't think it would change much around here, but Memphis will be leveled.

I've been watching programs about the caldera in Yellowstone. That could be a whopper, too.

Who'd a thunk living could be so perilous?

I am interested in joining but have 3 questions (so far) that I will ask of them.

1) I have a desktop that is running 24/7 but is rarely used. I never have it in sleep mode. Will it work.

Yes

Quote
2) I noticed that the sensor can be glued on. I could attach it to a concrete footing directly beneath the computer in the crawl space. The temperature would seldom fall below the freezing point. A 10 foot USB cable would be required. Would this be a a good location?

I'd say this would be a great location.

Quote
3) Would the data be available to post on my web site, if so would it have any meaning or purpose to the viewer?

Don't really know, but I'd venture to guess it wouldn't be available for your web site. Your best bet would be to ask them directly.

I would be into this like a big hairy dog, if I could display the local data generated by them on my site.

I already have earthquake data on my site including a local last 60 days plot.

It is my understanding that they are looking into allowing access your submitted data to use on your own web site.
That would sure be a nice start.

Hairy dog away! ;)

I would like to be able to display two sets of data, The World (minus stations) similar to what they have already, and just New Zealand area. That would make me jump at it. Since I sit not far away from one of NZ's main fault lines I would expect my input to be of some value to them.

Looked for an appropiate contact in the site, but no contact was specifically labeled as to enquiries about this sort of thing

Hosted on my own home server on ADSl =D> it has survived a number of very heavy hits from people having a look (all at once) when I have made some comment or news somewhere.

Lots in it.

Well I was hoping to have my earthquake detector up this weekend and was waiting for a USB powered extender cable so I can install the sensor in the basement and had one second day aired to me but UPS didn't hold up to there end. There web site today said it was out for delivery then tonight after waiting all day at 8:55pm they posted this bold face lie
THE RECEIVER REQUESTED A HOLD FOR A FUTURE DELIVERY DATE. UPS WILL ATTEMPT DELIVERY ON DATE REQUESTED / DELIVERY RESCHEDULED

It would of been better for them to tell me they couldn't find the house or the big brown truck broke down then to post a lie. Anyway shot off a couple of emails one to UPS that only allows 500 char and one to the company that I bought the cable from( thanked them for fast shipping of the cable and told them about wasting money on second day air).
Ok Sorry just really pissed about what UPS posted on there site blaming it on me. Well maybe next weekend I can get it installed.

a USB powered extender cable

After what length do you need a powered cable?

Living in an earthquake prone area I couldn't resist so I just ordered one. The new toy this season was going to be a lightning detector ( to monitor 1, or two thunder/lightning events a year). I just saved $500+.

I received mine in the mail this week and will install it today. I had a couple of questions, I emailed them and received a response within a few hours. I am impressed.

ASKED
just purchased a sensor and before I install it this weekend.I have a couple of questions.

Do you want the sensor aligned to true north, or magnetic north. The magnetic declination here is about 16°.

I intend to attach the sensor, probably with glue, to the top of an interior concrete footing in the crawlspace directly under the computer. It will be approximately 2 feet below grade level, dry, and probably never subject to temperatures below freezing. Is this a good location?

I will have to use a 6 foot USB extension cable. Any problems with this?

RESPONSE:
Thanks for purchasing a sensor and thanks for your interest and support of QCN.

To answer your questions:

1. We align the sensor to magnetic north. Once the data is uploaded to the QCN server, we rotate the horizontal components to true north and true east digitally.

2. The crawl-space is a great location as long as it is dry.
3. We’ve used up to three 3-meter USB extension cables without any problems.
4. Thanks for running QCN. Your desktop sounds like a great addition to QCN!

Thanks again for your support of QCN! We greatly appreciate it!

Cheers,
-Jesse

I dont think direction would matter at all... all this is measuring is vibration, it has no way to tell the direction of vibration. Since most of the monitoring stations are laptops using the built in sensor they could be orientate in any direction at any time.

Was having a problem with the Bonic program when running the graphic worked on that this morning posted a fix over on there forum, the graphic would only run a short time before it reset the JoyWarrior sensor and start the graphic from the beginning again.

Forgot to mention kind of like watching the grass grow in the winter here in Ohio.

This note was on the referenced page:

(NB: a blue row is a 'ping' trigger to see who is running QCN)

I think this just shows when they're polling your computer to see if it's on and/or working.
