"Explosive" battery charger
« on: August 15, 2017, 03:33:48 PM »
I decided to buy a set of rechargeable alkaline batteries to test if they are actually good for use with my Ambient Weather WS-1001 clone. But I should avoid using it, well, at least according to the warnings on the bottom of the charger.

Its from a foreign country, lost in translation somewhere,  prob means, it will if you do the below stuff...

Did ya make sure you can use rechargeables in your station, i know some electronics do not like it, plus, a
rechargeable will not last anywhere near as long as a normal, especially those elcheapo batteries, i would
prob be wary, the higher the mah the better the battery will be, i bet those green things are no more than 800
ha, just looked at the charger again, i bet those green thing are no more than 600 ;) lol a min of 1100 mah
better around the 2500 mark though, last much longer...
Kind regards
Bashy

I wasn't aware that alkaline batteries were able to be recharged, at least safely.  The chemistry to generate voltage and current are far different from the recharge devices.

I can't read what the writing is on the green batteries, but you may have some old NiCad or maybe the Metal Hydride ones, such as from Tmart (which has been a good place to get a variety of batteries and chargers in many quality ranges)

I know that there are some Lithium ones that you are supposed to charge in a fibreglas bag so if they explode they don't throw debris all over.  That makes me a wee bit nervous.  I have some Lithium ones that look like a giant AA battery that power some great flashlights (also from TMart) quite well and have recharged with no problem at all over many cycles.

What's the markings on the batteries you have, or can you take a couple close ups in bright light so we can see the info?

Here are some pictures of the batteries. They seem to be the same type of batteries that come with the Ambient Weather stations (ws-1001, ws-1002 etc etc). The clones usually don't come with any batteries

I bought these batteries the same day I bought my weather station, both from Aliexpress. But the station arrived a month earlier, so I just bought some Panasonic alkaline to use with my station. I don't know if I'm going to use these "rechargeable alkaline", even if it's the type of battery that the manual suggests to use.

I'm currently using these ones.

Typically, it's a "steam" explosion, a water vapor pressure explosion. However, when/if the battery chemistry releases HYDROGEN gas--which is EXTREMELY explosive & EASILY ignited--it truly can become a "detonation" explosion.
