Can we just declare WU as an 'unfriendly' and prohibit promoting them in any way here?

Umm.. no.  There are folks who still use the data there, and rather than 'unfriendly', I'd just call them 'unresponsive' to feedback from contributors.  Other than CWOP, there aren't websites that offer the numbers of PWS data AFAIK.

Given your past musings on them, I do understand your wish to be rid of them.. it's not a universally shared assessment I think.

If WU, Weather Company, Weather Channel (or whatever the combination of ownership/relationship entails) is in decline and going away soon, then I am glad I haven't invested in a weather station yet (still waiting to see what Acurite Atlas looks like). I use WU stations in my locale frequently and find the service very valuable and the accuracy of most of those stations seems to be quite good (based on simple devices I have in my back yard and home for comparison; rain gauge, barometer, in/out thermometer). WU is the only service I have found that has "up to the minute" conditions that are reasonably close to my exact location and it is the main reason I have taken an interest in buying a PWS. I really don't want to get into my own weather web site, so a service like WU is the only thing that would motivate me to buy a PWS. The NWS reporting at my local airport is 20 miles away. That is often not that useful or relevant to me, so WU gives me weather information that is close to home. So whatever the problems with WU are, I hope it continues.

If a service goes away and there is a demand for it it will be replaced by someone else, I have no worries about that.

WU used to have many cool extra features, but they are gradually discontinuing them anyway and soon it will only be the station pages there and forecasts. Both of these are already available at alternative websites and implementing something similar to rapid-fire is not such a major issue and nothing proprietary. So it is only the number of users where WU excells, but if they shut down these users will go elsewhere so you will just use different website.

When I bought my PWS, I had no idea what was available online, nor cared, I bought it for me. If you're waiting for the "perfect place" to display your data online instead of getting it for yourself, you're missing out, everyday.

The 'perfect pace' could well be your own website.

You could even offer to host the data of those nearby PWS units.

+1

and have your data in 2s intervals if your server can handle it :D (+ all the other advantages of hosting your own site, hosting these days can be quite cheap and even if you are an absolute beginner and know nothing about coding there are several solutions available to you right on this forum..., the only thing you will have to "sacrifice" is some time)
