Monster Snowstorm Coming Soon?
« on: January 30, 2014, 11:34:07 PM »
When I got home from work this evening, my wife told me she had been reading about a European model predicting a monster snow storm for the northeast  coming soon.  She said the TV weatherman mentioned it, too.  Realizing it's just a model, and it's a week or so away, and all the other models are not predicting it, it's just a topic for conversation at this point.  But I was wondering if other folks were hearing anything about it?   :-k

Also mentioned here about half way down the page.

Quote
One of the larger of the storms could bring substantial precipitation and widespread travel disruptions from eastern Texas to New England spanning next Tuesday and Wednesday.

The storm during the middle of next week may bring a dose of drenching rain and locally strong thunderstorms to the South. On the northern and western fringe of the storm, snow and a wintry mix would fall with the potential for a heavy accumulation in part of the Midwest and Northeast.

So far we are on the northern fringes of this.  We have not had a significant snow storm yet this season.  Always too far north or south.  But because it's been so cold nothing much has melted and we have about a 14" snow depth.

INDIANAPOLIS - Dire predictions of 30 inches of snow in Indiana in a storm set to affect the area early next week have been circulating on social media, prompting meteorologists to debunk them.

Latest GFS showing some decent snowfalls, but not anything really over 18 inches other than the Adirondacks

Latest run starting to really vamp things up for you Tony! This model is out to 192, so it won't all come down at once.

I show about an inch here out of the last one. Chance for more next week. However the moisture total (I am working on my weather stats )  is 0.23 inches for January. that isn't much.   What sucks  is  that we have had wind chills and the wind has blown the snow away, and we have ice under that former snow. So walking around in the yard and by the station is dangerous.  We need snow on top of that ice until about March 1.

The cold is what is the hard thing around here,  I don't recall when we had such a cold winter. I am used to snow and in the 20s and 30s, not this below zero stuff.

The monster storm story was swirling and blowing (pardon the puns!) around down here the past few days.  The TV weatherman tonight debunked it for here.  It's supposed to be in the 50s nearly every day for the next week.  So a monster snow wouldn't last very long.

Forecast for east central WI is for light snow now Tuesday night.  Probably an inch or two.  Put away the shovels and use the leaf blower again.

The NWS here is saying that Tues night and Wed there is ~ 90% chance for just about everything.....the local TV types say pretty much the same, some are forecasting snow depths of 3-12" (depending on where you are) along with rain, ice, sleet......SOOOOO, it's still way up in the air ](*,)  3 different chances for the week, Monday and Saturday included.

Very narrow band of heavy, wet snow expected to hit the region. Here is the map I made on my blog. Winter storm warnings already on display.

Very sharp cutoff here on the snow. About 2" on the ground here and coming down hard, but there's a layer of ice underneath from freezing rain for several hours overnight. 30 miles south of here there is nothing on the ground, 30 miles to the north there is 9 inches on the ground!

The source of this "monster snow" forecast wasn't The Weather Channel was it? They were saying 2 feet of snow for here on Tuesday and our local TV meteorologist during the 6 pm newscast went off on The Weather Channel calling them "irresponsible" to make a prediction like that. Especially four days out. He said his phone has been ringing like crazy from people asking if we were going to get 2 feet of snow. I wish I would have recorded it. He was not happy.

Y'all can have it.  I got mostly rain, but enough ice on trees to be worrisome for the next few days.  Temps will be in the 20s with winds in the upper teens.  Hopefully not too many branches will break.  Some are bending over quite a bit.
