Newb....
« on: September 11, 2008, 09:01:39 PM »
Hey folks name is Adam, I live in Front Royal Virginia. I am married got 2 kids and 4 crazy wacked out cats. Live on the western slope of a mountain at a elevation of 795 Feet. (Mountains peak is 1810.) I have been a weather nut for a long time. I just ordered a replacement weather system ( Oregon Scientific WMR90A ) My last one got destroyed by a freak weather event last winter. I'll tell that story at another time. But yeah I am one of those guys who loves to spend hours review forecasts and also feel there is nothing more amazing then the power of mother nature.

On a side note....
I was on one site and am hoping it will be different here... I as told by more then one member that my system was junk and get a real system like Davis. I had a Davis and that is what was destroyed by a major ice storm/ and wind event. I know the WMR90A isn't the most high tech and best system but right now it is all I can afford.

Welcome Adam,
You are in good company with a bunch of other Weather Nuts and I think you will find it a little different here!  There are a lot of OS owners on this forum that are very satisfied with their equipment.  It is too bad you lost your Davis to a storm.  That's not a cheap one to replace.  Hopefully you won't have a similar ice storm with your new system.

Welcome Adam!!
Another Virginian here!
And another Oregon Scientific Station operator as well.
It sure was a bummer to loose your other station to a freak of nature...sorry to hear that!

Everyone here seems willing to help when you have a question or problem..very much unlike some other places :-)

Welcome Adam. One thing you will find that while there might be a bit of friendly rivalry here, it doesn't matter what you own. The fact is you want to be part of a fun and interesting hobby.

Welcome to the forum. And sorry to hear about you Davis station. I also have an OS station. The WMR-968. It has served me very well over the years. Have not read anything about the station that you have. But I understand that you can only purchase what you can afford. Hope you enjoy your new station and that it gives you many years of enjoyment.

Thanks,
Anthony

Hi Adam and Welcome,
I think you'll like this forum for all the great help from nice people. Have not seen that pws uppity attitude here and as was said before, it is a group and wants to have fun with their hobby and improve their knowledge and data quality at the same time. It's been my experience that all pws have there pros and cons with reliability and accuracy. Right now I run two pws a LaCrosse 2310 and a WMR968 in the same location. Interesting to see the differences in data between them especially with RH.I also was told the 2310 was no good.
Best wishes,
good luck with the school bully.

Welcome to the Forum Adam!   \:D/

I too own a WMR968 setup and really like it. Had to replace a rain gauge this year after years of use. Not bad I think.... Other than that, I enjoy what I have. As has been stated before, there are many users with various kinds of equipment, all who enjoy looking at the weather and it's effects on us.  Sad to hear that someone dissed you about your equipment. We all start out with what we can afford and understand. People forget that too easily... Don't feel bad about what you have. All are welcomed here and look forward to seeing more of you.. BTW, you have a website? ( didn't see one...)

Jim

Adam is probably looking at the wmr100 console as his 90a is compatible, so his sensor suite will work with the 100.  So for only 59.95 he can get the console that will allow him to get his station hooked up to his pc.

Hi Adam, and welcome to the forum. My name is Alan, I live in the UK. I had a WMR100, it was a gift from my wife last Christmas.

Unfortunately, I had a lot of problems with mine. The communication between the console and my computer was very hit-and-miss. I don't run my station 24/7. Some days it would connect, others it wouldn't, which resulted in a complete power-down of the of the console and then a restart.

In the end Oregon Scientific UK got so fed-up with my complaints that they replaced my 100 console with a 200, which means that I am able to use the original sensors. The difference between the two is quite unbelievable. The in-built data logger on the 200 is also very good.

My advice to anyone thinking of buying a WMR100, would be if you can stretch the funds go for the WMR200. You won't regret it.

Alan.

Hi Adam,

It's a small world - I went to high school in Front Royal (56-59) at Randolph-Macon Academy. Front Royal is a great place with some gorgeous fall colors. Looking forward to  seeing your data on a website in the future. Hope to be back there next year for our 50th class reunion.

Don... You will be shocked at how much has changed now... We have a Target, Lowes, Super Wal-Mart, a whole huge new shopping center, and lots of other changes.  When you come out we will have to arrange meeting.  You will want to book a room at the new Holiday Inn on Rt 522/340.  Very nice hotel near a beautiful 18 hole golf coarse.

I made a trip back to RMA about 8 years ago with my wife. I was doing some consulting in Owings Mills, MD for about six weeks and decided to see what the old place looked like. You are right - the whole area has changed dramatically since the late 50's! They even have freeways now! Our class reunion coordinator is looking around for places to book for the whole class so will pass on the info about the Holiday Inn to see if we can get some group rates. Graduating class size was 63 but that has now dwindled to around 35 of us still left. Many didn't make it through the Vietnam War...  :-(

Will make contact as the 2009 reunion gets closer. Would be nice to meet another mutual weather observer!
