It will be interesting to see if these two lines bypass me or weaken down to light showers if and when they get here.

A remarkably broad and consistent heavy rain pattern has been making its way across Oklahoma as pictured this morning.  Part of northwestern Oklahoma got it extra generous. If it continues without weakening much, there will hardly be any complainers in the state, including me, talking about being bypassed this time around.

However, I am already hearing family and friends complaining since it's the first weekend day of the Tulsa State Fair, and this big line is just off to my west.  We still need the rain.

I suspect opening an Oklahoma fair works better to cause rain than washing your car.

Wow, that is some nice rain! Looks like the southwest part of the state could really use the rain, but it looks like you all's drought has improved over the summer, am I correct?

Yes, but the yellow on the drought map until recently had been white.  Hopefully, today's rain will stop the deterioration back to a drought.  Possibly more rain coming next weekend.

That's good to hear, the whole Plains area has seemed like they've been in a drought the last two or three years, am I correct? Have you all had any serious water supply issues?

No, Stillwater gets it water from a 38 mile long, 3 ft. wide pipeline from Kaw Lake.  Near the OK/KS border, the lake was carved into the Arkansas River decades ago.  The Arkansas River is one of the longest rivers in the country as it makes its way to the Mississippi and gets much of its water from snow melt and springs in the Rockies.  So the lake was only 1 ft. below normal during the height of the drought.

Before that, relying on a smaller, much nearer lake just didn't work out for Stillwater during dry summers, while discouraging prospects for new business and industry.  And decades more before that the lake pictured in my graphic below eventually didn't work out for a reliable municipal water supply, either.

Meanwhile, in case you didn't see it, here's a story on how residents in tiny towns near Stillwater are coping with the threat of running out of water:
