"Featured weather website"
« on: August 20, 2008, 10:20:28 PM »

Seeing how this title is locked, I just placed a sort of a clone hear.

Quite a nice event was held hear, some very nice web pages were noted and the show was open to all.

This little event had some 640 views.  It was open for voting.  It had 37 votes.

This forum has 725 members.

Don't you think the member voting number really SUCKS.

Guess you could remove my post, but I did get it out.

Naaa... your post can stay Bill :D

You bring up a great point.. participation in the polling has been low for as long as the polls have run.  The maximum number of votes was 47 in the Winter '06 poll.  Here's the statistics on the polls conducted so far:

Winter 2007 - 41 votes total, winner had 21 votes (51%)
Fall 2007 - 43 votes total, winner had 17 votes (39%)
Summer 2007 - 37 votes total, winner had 24 votes (65%)
Spring 2007 - 32 votes total, winner had 11 votes (34%)
Winter 2006 - 47 votes total, winner had 18 votes (38%)
Fall 2006 - 35 votes total, winner had 16 votes (46%)

You can see that participation ranges from 32 to 47 irrespective of membership growth.  WXForum.net came online in June, 2006 to replace the weatherforum.net forum (due to sudden demise of the registrar for the domain, and snatching of it by a domain skimmer).  On the old forum, Gary ran the poll monthly, and when Chris, Drew, Larry and I started up this forum, we'd decided to make it a 'seasonal' thing instead.

You can see that a lot of folks who register, never post, and a bunch of the 'old timers' have not been on in quite a while.

So, while the turnout is disappointing, it is within the customary statistics, sad as that is.

Thanks for bringing up the topic.

Best regards,
Ken

Well, that was open to all members at nomination time.

Hay, stayed over night in Snoqualmie once.  Back in 81, at a friends place.  Real nice.  I had breakfast in the place hanging over the water falls.

Bill's correct, the members nominate sites during the nomination period (about a week before the poll is taken).

The guidance that Gary Oldham provided on weatherforum.net remains our guidance

It certainly can't hurt for you to describe why you think your nomination is deserving of this honor.

Don't forget that it is perfectly OK to nominate someone who has been nominated in the past but was not selected! We've had some very deserving nominees, and close runoffs!

Some criteria to consider when making nominations:

The visual attractiveness of the site
Ease of navigation
Quality and quantity of useful or interesting information
Educational value
Distinctiveness

While not a hard and fast rule, sites that only use the unmodified default web page template that comes with the software, while absolutely useful and functional, may not cross into that next level to warrant featuring in this manner. Please try to address these areas while nominating a site.

Ken

Despite the low voter turnout, I like the quarterly "Featured Weather Website", Ken. It's rewarding to see sites recognized and honored by fellow weather enthusiasts.

Thanks for running the forum, and please keep up the great work!

This little event had some 640 views.  It was open for voting.  It had 37 votes.
Several of those views came from me, and I'm sure other nominees checked the page regularly as well, as the race between my site and Jim's site was very close.

This forum has 725 members.
A lot of people register when they have a problem, drift away when that problem is solved, and don't come back until the next problem develops.

I like the quarterly "Featured Weather Website"
I agree that doing this quarterly is about right, given that it takes 2-3 weeks to gather nominations and conduct the poll.

Thanks, Ken, for doing the write-ups for each of the winners.  They are always fun to read.

I just took a little bit time to look through the members list and checked last active date on several names of interest.  Looks like a number of them disappeared around the May through July time frame.  Could be once the snow flies and the dark cold nights return a few will show back up again.  The voting number may not that far below the current active within the last week to one month list.

What's really surprising to me not only on this forum but all forums is the number of people that register but never return after that.  I suppose they might have returned and not logged in before they drifted away but still...

It's not like you have to register to see a full thread here like some places.

I would suggest placing the actual thread for the voting higher up in the board listings. Perhaps giving it its own Board/Forum header with it as the only sub-forum available?

I know when I come here my first "look fors" are what pertain to my software/hardware, what I might be thinking of doing or buying and then anything relative to "ME ME ME"

It was a while before I even noticed these last two board areas (Organizations & Debris).

Then again, all that doesn't really address the lopsided relation of Views:Votes.

Hey - just make it so if you don't vote you go to Internet jail!

Good idea about placement of the forum.  I've moved it to the top of the page under Administration (second forum in the list).

About the voting, we'd tried to organize an Anti-Apathy rally, but couldn't stir up any interest :D
