Hurricane or Nor'Easter?
« on: October 22, 2012, 03:40:57 PM »
Anyone else watching all the crazieness of some of computer models hinting at
maybe a Hurricane or Nor'Easter crashing into the east coast anywhere between day 7 and 10?

I've seen hype or a hurricane to hit Boston to 4' of snow in Pennsylvania. WAY too far out
for some of these guys to go completely bananas over it already.

I heard some weathermen talking about that last night and this morning.  There's supposed to be a strong front and a pool of really cold air moving down next week.  If a high pressure area in the south doesn't move, and the front stalls out, the low pressure area could develop into a storm and ride up along the east coast to the northeast.  But that's a lot of ifs.

There is an omega block over Alaska so the air going up and around it is going to dive south pulling cold artic air.Need tolook away from yor respected areas and look far to the west to see your weather influnces sometime. I know I watchwhat develops over Chins and russia for or long term weather .

EXTENDED FORECAST DISCUSSION
NWS HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL PREDICTION CENTER COLLEGE PARK MD
329 PM EDT TUE OCT 23 2012

VALID 12Z FRI OCT 26 2012 - 12Z TUE OCT 30 2012

...POTENTIAL FOR MAJOR STORM OVER THE MID ATLANTIC & NORTHEAST
EARLY NEXT WEEK...

PRELIMINARY UPDATE...

UPDATED THE PRELIMINARY FRONTS AND PRESSURES FOR DAYS 3 THROUGH 7
USING THE 00Z/23 EUROPEAN CENTRE ENSEMBLE MEAN, WITH A SMALL
INCORPORATION OF THE 00Z/23 EUROPEAN CENTRE DETERMINISTIC MODEL TO
LEND MORE DEFINITION TO THE SYNOPTIC GRADIENTS ACROSS THE NATION.
USED THE MOST RECENT FORECAST FROM THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER
FOR THE TRACK OF TROPICAL STORM SANDY THROUGH DAY 5, WITH A CURVE
TO THE NORTHWEST DAYS 6 AND 7 BASED ON THE ECENS MEAN. THE 00Z/23
GEM GLOBAL CONTINUES TO CLUSTER WITH THE ECMWF FOR THE BEHAVIOR OF
SANDY ONCE IT TRANSITIONS TO AN EXTRATROPICAL SYSTEM, INDICATING
THAT THE CYCLONE GETS PULLED BACK TOWARD THE SHARP UPPER TROUGH
CLOSING OVER THE OHIO VALLEY. THE ECMWF AND GEM GLOBAL HAVE
SEVERAL RUNS OF CONTINUITY NOW WITH THE EVOLUTION OF THIS EVENT,
WITH THE DETERMINISTIC GFS LESS STABLE. THERE HAVE BEEN GFS
ENSEMBLE MEMBERS QUITE SIMILAR TO THE ECMWF/GEM CAMP FOR THE LAST
FEW DAYS OF MODEL CYCLES, PUTTING THE DETERMINISTIC GFS SOLUTIONS
IN A BROADER FRAMEWORK WITH THEIR TRACK OF SANDY WELL OVER THE
OPEN ATLANTIC. WILL BE UPDATING THE TRACK OF SANDY THROUGH DAY 5
FOR THE FINAL PACKAGE WITH THE ADVENT OF THE NEW NATIONAL
HURRICANE CENTER FORECAST, AND ITS BEHAVIOR AS AN EXTRATROPICAL
LOW THEREAFTER AS PER OUR HOTLINE COORDINATION.

FINAL...

ELECTED TO STAY THE COURSE BY KEEPING THE MAJOR EAST COAST STORM
IN PLAY FOR THE FINAL FORECAST. THE 12Z/23 DETERMINISTIC GFS SENDS
SANDY'S CIRCULATION OUT PAST BERMUDA BY THE END OF THE PERIOD,
WHILE THE 12Z/23 GEFS MEAN INCORPORATES IT ALONG THE EAST COAST IN
LINE WITH THE HPC MANUAL FORECAST. THE 12Z/23 GEM GLOBAL KEEPS
SANDY OUT OF REACH OF THE DIGGING TROUGH OVER NORTH AMERICA,
THOUGH LIKE THE LATEST GFS, IT IS PERHAPS BEST TO REGARD SUCH A
DETERMINISTIC SOLUTION AS A SLIGHTLY SOUPED-UP ENSEMBLE MEMBER.
THE 12Z/23 ECMWF STILL INCORPORATES AN EXTREMELY DEEP
POST-TROPICAL SANDY INTO THE MID-LEVEL PIVOT POINT OF THE POLAR
JET IN THE VICINITY OF LONG ISLAND EARLY NEXT TUESDAY, THE DYNAMIC
TRANSFER RESULTING IN A MINIMUM PRESSURE OF AT LEAST 932MB.
THEREIN LIES THE STORM'S MENACE- A POWERHOUSE CAPABLE OF WHIPPING
THE ATLANTIC INTO A FRENZY AND CHURNING UP DANGEROUS TIDES. OF
PARTICULAR NOTE IS THE COINCIDENCE OF THE FULL MOON ON SUNDAY,
OFTEN A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR IN HISTORICAL EVENTS. THE OCEAN EFFECTS
OF THE SYSTEM MAY STILL BE REALIZED EVEN IF POST-TROPICAL SANDY
DOES NOT MAKE LANDFALL IN THE UNITED STATES. BESIDES THE WIND, THE
OTHER SENSIBLE WEATHER THREAT IS HEAVY RAINS, WITH HEAVY SNOWS
POSSIBLE ON THE SOUTHWEST SIDE OF THE HYBRID CIRCULATION WHERE
CONTINENTAL POLAR AIR RUSHES ACROSS THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS.

HAVE PREFERRED THE EUROPEAN CENTRE GUIDANCE FOR HANDLING OF THE
MAIN BAND OF WESTERLIES FOR SEVERAL DAYS NOW, ITS SYNOPTIC NUANCES
BEST SERVING THE CENTRAL AND WESTERN UNITED STATES WHERE THE FLOW
OPENS UP IN THE WAKE OF THE AMPLIFICATION OF THE EASTERN TROUGH.

Most of the east coast needs to stay tuned.  Track seems to be shifting westward.

Can't wait to see the model runs tomorrow. Some have it hooking back into upstate NY on Wednesday.
10-15" of rain? We'll see.

I'd rather have 10-15" of snow.  Kick start the ski season.......   Although the rain would keep my pool cover down better on windy days.
Surprised its keeping its hurricane status after Jamaica and Cuba landfalls, considering it spun up so quick.
we'll see after next update is the west shift trend continues.

The GFS 850's for Halloween. Hope there's no cold air Andrew.
It's just about over my house too. It's way far out but for kicks here it is.

NYC and much of the coast is probably going to end up under water.

Any estimates? 10 Billion in damages maybe?

That's Halloweens treat for the Northeast. If it pans out as models are predicting it will be horrific for NYC. I heard they named it Frankenstorm.

a nice change over to wet snow after the low passes and the colder air whips around would be a great touch..happened last year on the 29th here in Bucks County PA...low pressure was in the perfect position to give us 6-10 inches of "rain changing to a brief period of snow" forecasted.
Thanks,

Chris

My site is already getting swamped by everyone wanting to know what the track is going to be. The latest Euro model has it directly impacting the DC/MD/VA area.... I am not looking forward to this storm as people are still recovering from Irene...... Too much emotional stress for many.....

The local talking heads have been ranting about it now for the last 48 hrs., we're gonna get something....just don't know what or how much. One track they're showing has it coming pretty much right over me....just have to wait a day or two to 'firm' that up. Did the tour of all my  stations this AM to check batteries, solar panels, etc. Even test ran the genny....the local power co's have a REAL BAD track record here........ Jack

I really hope for the best for all of you up through there that might be affected.  Those that wish for violent weather will probably be happy, but many people could be catastrophically affected.  I'm sure FEMA is already gearing up.

I really hate to say this, and I'm really not trying to be political, but a fearsome storm could really play havoc with the election coming up, since victims could be hither, thither, and yon.
